Globally widespread weeds show preadaptation to non‐analogue climates: a common garden approach

open access: yesOikos, EarlyView.
Climatic niche shifts have been documented for plant species introduced into new regions, however the underlying mechanisms are poorly understood. Niche shifts into novel climates are particularly difficult to predict as previous occurrence data cannot reveal whether these novel climates are within species' fundamental niche limits.

From mainland to islands: the evolution of resistance and tolerance to herbivory in long‐lived oaks

open access: yesOikos, EarlyView.
Island biogeography theory predicts that island plants should exhibit reduced defences compared with their mainland relatives due to relaxed herbivory pressure. However, growing empirical evidence challenges this prediction, revealing substantial variation among systems, plant lineages and defence types.

Do good neighbours compensate for bad climate? The case of sessile oak Quercus petraea in phylogenetically distant neighbourhoods

open access: yesOikos, EarlyView.
Stressful climates threaten the performance of individuals and the survival of species, but individual performance also depends on biotic interactions with neighbours, so that ‘good' neighbours might in theory compensate for ‘bad' climates. However, what makes a good neighbour, and why, has been little studied.

Innovations in polysaccharide‐based hydrogels in sustainable agriculture

open access: yesPolymer International, EarlyView.
Polysaccharide‐based hydrogels are promising in sustainable agriculture, as these natural polymers have the ability to absorb water and nutrients and release them gradually in the soil, in addition to ensuring biodegradability and lower cost. However, some challenges still need to be overcome.

Weeds in a changing climate: Competitors or service plants?

open access: yesPLANTS, PEOPLE, PLANET, EarlyView.
Reducing herbicide use and preparing agroecosystems for climate change are two top priorities on the global policy agenda. Here, we explore whether these two challenges can be tackled simultaneously. While weeds are generally considered a threat to crop production, we show that weeds can help overcome climate change challenges in agroecosystems ...

Breeding for multi‐stress resilience in crops: Myth or possibility?

open access: yesPLANTS, PEOPLE, PLANET, EarlyView.
Climate change threatens millions of farmers worldwide by exposing crops to multiple concurrent or sequential environmental stresses such as drought, heat, waterlogging, and diseases. Although crops have long been selected under naturally occurring multi‐stress conditions, breeding pipelines largely focus on optimal or single‐stress environments ...
