Sow and piglet behaviour during lactation: A review focusing on selected behaviour manifested by foster sows and their fostered piglets [PDF]

open access: yesBIO Web of Conferences
Foster (F) sows are used to nurse piglets from other sows. Nurse (N) sows are used to nurse other piglets after weaning their own piglets during lactation. Sows nursing non-biological piglets can reject or attack unfamiliar piglets.

The Role of Genetic Selection on Agonistic Behavior and Welfare of Gestating Sows Housed in Large Semi-Static Groups

open access: yesAnimals, 2020
Confinement of gestating sows is becoming banished in favor of group-housing in countries worldwide, forcing breeding companies to develop genetic lines adapted for social living.

Chloroplast Stress Signals Orchestrate Epidermis‐Specific Remodeling of Mitochondria and ER Under High Light

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
High light exposure triggers an epidermis‐specific remodeling of mitochondria and ER in Arabidopsis, driven by chloroplast‐derived signals. Live‐cell imaging shows that HL rapidly suppresses mitochondrial motility, followed by fusion‐driven elongation and ER cisternal expansion.

Group housing during gestation affects the behaviour of sows and the physiological indices of offspring at weaning

open access: yesAnimal, 2014
To compare the behaviour of sows and the physiological indices of their offspring in stall and group-housing systems, 28 sows were randomly distributed into two systems with 16 sows in stalls, and the other 12 sows were divided into three groups with ...

Influence of dietary n-3 long-chain fatty acids on microbial diversity and composition of sows’ feces, colostrum, milk, and suckling piglets’ feces

open access: yesFrontiers in Microbiology, 2022
IntroductionVery little is known about the impact of n-3 long-chain fatty acids (n-3 LCFAs) on the microbiota of sows and their piglets. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of n-3 LCFA in sow diets on the microbiota composition of sows ...

Examining Phenotypic Structural Traits as Indicators for Reproductive Longevity Success in Sows [PDF]

open access: yes, 2020
The objective of this study was to examine structure and body conformation traits of 494 gilts/sows as a prediction of reproductive longevity in sows. This study focused on specific traits including body length, body depth, front and rear pastern angles,

An Increasing Misalignment Between Crop Distribution and Environmental Resources Under Climate Change in China

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Climate change reshapes the spatial alignment between crop production and environmental resources. Using multi‐source data and a crop model, integrated climatic, water, and soil endowments for maize and wheat are quantified and compared with harvest distributions.

The effect of different paddock rotation strategies for organic sows on behaviour, welfare and the environment [PDF]

open access: yes, 2002
This report was presented at the UK Organic Research 2002 Conference. Two alternative paddock rotations for dry sows were established on an organic farm: Rotational (40 x 40m moved three times per year) and Set Stocked (120 x 40m in place for one year ...
