An Increasing Misalignment Between Crop Distribution and Environmental Resources Under Climate Change in China

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Climate change reshapes the spatial alignment between crop production and environmental resources. Using multi‐source data and a crop model, integrated climatic, water, and soil endowments for maize and wheat are quantified and compared with harvest distributions.

The differences in energy metabolism and redox status between sows with short and long farrowing duration

open access: yesAnimal, 2021
Farrowing duration is a crucial factor affecting survival of piglets and health of sows, and is highly correlated with the incidence of stillbirth. The present study assessed the metabolic characteristics of sows with short farrowing duration (SFD) or ...

Effect of housing on rubber slat mats during pregnancy on the behaviour and welfare of sows in farrowing crates [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
peer-reviewedThe aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of flooring type during gestation, lameness and limb lesion scores on welfare and behaviour of sows in farrowing crates. Sixty sows group-housed during gestation in pens with solid concrete

Single‐Cell Transcriptomics Reveals FLS2‐Dependent Hypoxia Signaling and ERF13‐Mediated Transcription During flg22‐Triggered Immunity

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
This study employs sc‐RNA sequencing, genetics, and phenotyping to systematically map the cell‐type‐specific immune responses triggered by flg22. It reveals FLS2‐dependent transcriptional reprogramming in epidermal and mesophyll cells, and uncovers crosstalk between immune and hypoxia signaling pathways.

Obesity of Sows at Late Pregnancy Aggravates Metabolic Disorder of Perinatal Sows and Affects Performance and Intestinal Health of Piglets

open access: yesAnimals, 2019
This study explored the effect of obesity of sows in late pregnancy on metabolic status of perinatal sows and performance, intestinal health, and immune system of offspring piglets.

Housing Systems Influence Gut Microbiota Composition of Sows but Not of Their Piglets

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2017
Different housing systems can be used in pig production and little is known about their effect on gut microbiota composition. In this study we characterized fecal microbiota by sequencing the rRNA genes in sows kept during gestation in conventional pens ...

Agricultural land use in Danish organic pig production [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
In Denmark the organic sows farrow outdoor on pasture (picture 1) and the gestation sows are outdoor from 15 April to 1 November on pasture (picture 2). Some farmers also keep their weaned piglets on outdoor pasture (picture 3). In the project pEcosystem

Bioenergy Cropping Reduces the Spatiotemporal Scaling of Soil Bacterial Biodiversity

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Consistent with patterns observed in plant and animal communities, soil bacterial communities exhibit significant species–time–area and phylogenetic–time–area relationships independent of nested structure. Bioenergy cropping significantly reduces the spatiotemporal scaling rates, particularly in sandy loam soils.

How effective are clinical pre-farrowing risk assessment and the use of soft rubber mats in preventing shoulder ulcers in at-risk sows?

open access: yesPorcine Health Management, 2019
Background Lameness, low BCS and scar tissue in the skin covering the tuber spina scapulae are known as risk factors for shoulder ulcer in sows. In a two-step study, the predictive ability of pre-farrowing clinical examination and the preventive effect ...

Natural Variation of NAR5 Determines Nitrogenase Activity and the Yield in Soybean

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
This study identified NAR5, a gene encoding a subtilisin‐like protease, that regulates nitrogenase activity in soybean nodules. Overexpressing NAR5 delayed nodule senescence, enhancing nitrogenase activity, yield, and low‐nitrogen tolerance. The elite haplotype NAR5HapI‐1 linked to superior nitrogenase activity and greater seed weight has been ...
