Adult Sex Ratio as a Demographic Feedback Linking Mating Systems, Parental Care, and Evolution

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Breeding systems are some of the most diverse social behavior, and our team is investigation the evolutionary causes of this diversity. This review summarises our research carried out at the University of Bath. We argue that demographic components of wild populations, especially the adult sex ratio, plays a key role driving breeding system variation ...

Histological changes within ovarian cortex, oviductal and uterine mucosa in case of ovarian cysts presence in sows.

open access: yesFolia Histochemica et Cytobiologica, 2009
The aim of study was histological evaluation of oviduct and uterus mucosa in case of cystic ovarian degeneration in sows. Materials for evaluations were received after slaughtering of 294 sows at age of 2-5 years. Sows were eliminated breeding and culled

Influence of sow dietary polyunsaturated fatty acid source on the immunoglobulin profile of piglets [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
To examine the effect of different n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) sources in sow diets on piglets’ immunoglobulin (Ig) profile, two groups of twelve sows each were fed different diets from day 45 of pregnancy and during lactation on two commercial

Effects of dietary fibre on behaviour and satiety in pigs [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
During the past decades there has been considerable interest in the use of dietary fibre in both animal and human nutrition. In human subjects dietary fibre has been studied intensively for possible effects on body-weight management and health. In animal

Optimal Grazing Exclusion Duration to Enhance Soil Carbon Sequestration in Degraded Grasslands

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Across China, grazing exclusion reaches the national mean soil organic carbon recovery benchmark sooner in high‐MAP regions (> 500 mm), but recovery is much slower where MAP < 300 mm. Scaling this strategy to 70% of China's degraded grasslands would sequester about 1.52 Pg of soil carbon over 10 years—roughly 17% of annual global fossil‐fuel emissions.

Boron deficiency responses in maize (Zea mays L.) roots

open access: yesJournal of Plant Nutrition and Soil Science, EarlyView., 2023
Abstract Background Boron (B) is an essential micronutrient for plants. Dicot plants respond to insufficient B supply by altering root architecture and root hair growth. How root systems of rather low‐B demanding monocot species such as maize (Zea mays L.) respond to B deficiency in terra has not been experimentally resolved, yet.

Chitosan oligosaccharide affects antioxidant defense capacity and placental amino acids transport of sows

open access: yesBMC Veterinary Research, 2016
BackgroundChitosan oligosaccharide (COS) is widely consumed as a functional food due to its multiple health effects, but few studies about COS supplement on placental antioxidant and nutrition transport capacity were reported.

Effects of dietary fibre and the provision of a foraging substrate on the welfare of sows in different grouping systems [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
End of project reportThere are no clear guidelines on how best to meet the EU legislative requirement (Council Directive 2001/88/EC) that pregnant sows and gilts should be provided with sufficient amounts of bulky or high fibre diets and high energy food

Genetic markers associated with field PRRSV-induced abortion rates [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
In gilts and sows, the more severe clinical manifestation of PRRSV occurs in late gestation and can result in up to 40% of abortion incidence. Despite the known genetic component in the resilience to PRRSV, there is scarce information regarding the ...

Engineering of Crystal and Domain Structures in Epitaxial Y:HfO2 Thin Films by YSZ Substrate Miscut

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
We investigate how YSZ substrate miscut influences crystal structure and domain formation in epitaxial Y‐doped HfO2 thin films. Using magnetron sputtering, high‐resolution X‐ray diffraction, atomic‐resolution scanning transmission electron microscopy, and first‐principles calculations, we systematically examine the characteristics of thickness‐ and ...
