SOX2 and squamous cancers

Seminars in Cancer Biology, 2020
SOX2 is a pleiotropic nuclear transcription factor with major roles in stem cell biology and in development. Over the last 10 years SOX2 has also been implicated as a lineage-specific oncogene, notably in squamous carcinomas but also neurological tumours, particularly glioblastoma.

SOX2 anophthalmia syndrome

American Journal of Medical Genetics Part A, 2005
AbstractHeterozygous, de novo, loss‐of‐function mutations in SOX2 have been shown to cause bilateral anophthalmia. Here we provide a detailed description of the clinical features associated with SOX2 mutations in the five individuals with reported mutations and four newly identified cases (including the first reported SOX2 missense mutation).

SOX2 Expression in Canine Neoplasia

Veterinary Pathology, 2020
SOX2 is a major transcriptional regulator of stem cell pluripotency and self-renewability. Its expression in cancer stem cells from several different tumor types in humans and rodent models directly implicates SOX2 in tumorigenicity, metastasis, drug resistance, recurrence, and poor survival.

SOX2 transcription factor binding and function

Development, 2022
ABSTRACT The transcription factor SOX2 is a vital regulator of stem cell activity in various developing and adult tissues. Mounting evidence has demonstrated the importance of SOX2 in regulating the induction and maintenance of stemness as well as in controlling cell proliferation, lineage decisions and differentiation.

Targeting SOX2 in anticancer therapy

Expert Opinion on Therapeutic Targets, 2018
SOX2 is a transcription factor that is important in the development and maintenance of the stem cell state. Furthermore, SOX2 is associated with cancer progression because it promotes the migration, invasion, and proliferation of cancer cells. SOX2 is also expressed in cancer stem cells and appears to be involved in the resistance toward anticancer ...

Comparative genomics on SOX2 orthologs

Oncology Reports, 2005
SOX2 and POU5F1 (OCT3 or OCT4) transcription factors are implicated in FGF4 expression in embryonic stem (ES) cells. SOX2, POU5F1, and FGF4 are key molecules for the integrome network in oncology and stem cell biology. SOX2 gene at human chromosome 3q26.33, SOX1 gene at 13q34, and SOX3 gene at Xq27.1 constitute a subfamily among the SOX gene family ...

STEM-23. TARGETING SOX2 IN GLIOBLASTOMA CELLS REVEALS HETEROGENEITY IN SOX2 DEPENDENCY

Neuro-Oncology, 2023
Abstract The malignant primary brain tumor glioblastoma (GBM) has a dismal prognosis and current treatment options are insufficient to cure patients. The stem cell transcription factor SOX2 has been indicated as vital for GBM stem cell maintenance in vitro and GBM tumor formation in vivo, rendering it a putative therapeutic target for ...

Sox2 roles in neural stem cells

The International Journal of Biochemistry & Cell Biology, 2010
Throughout vertebrate evolution, Sox2 marks the developing nervous system from its earliest developmental stages and, therein, the most undifferentiated precursor cells, including stem cells. Recent gene targeting studies investigated the function of Sox2 in two neuronal systems: the developing eye and brain.

SOX2 inhibits metastasis in gastric cancer

Journal of Cancer Research and Clinical Oncology, 2016
To investigate the potential role of SOX2 in gastric cancer (GC) metastasis. The SOX2 expression was detected using immunohistochemistry on a GC tissue microarray. The correlations of SOX2 expression with clinicopathological factors and 5-year survival were evaluated.
