Progress and Demonstrations on Space Division Multiplexing

2020 11th International Conference on Information, Intelligence, Systems and Applications (IISA, 2020
As optical networks urgently seek for extra capacity, Space Division Multiplexing (SDM) seems to be able to provide it. SDM can deploy multiple spatial channels in multi-core (MCFs) and/or multi-mode fibers (MMFs), and so, can increase the total transmission capacity.

Compact multiplexers for space-division multiplexing

2015 IEEE Photonics Conference (IPC), 2015
Compact space multiplexers with small footprint based on photonic integration, femtosecond laser inscription, fiber bundle and fused fiber techniques can be manufactured in mass production and packaged to assure high reliability, which are essential for the practical application of space-division multiplexing.

Space-Division Multiplexing

2020
Fiber-based optical communication networks are reaching a point where the capacity required on a single link can significantly exceed the capacity of a single-mode fiber, and at the same time conventional network architectures can no longer be scaled cost-effectively.

Nonlinearities in space-division multiplexed transmission

Optical Fiber Communication Conference/National Fiber Optic Engineers Conference 2013, 2013
We discuss the modeling of nonlinear propagation in multi-mode optical fibers. We show that nonlinear propagation in the presence of random mode coupling is described by coupled multi-component Manakov equations. The system implications of these equations on communications performance and information capacity are discussed.

SPACE-DIVISION MULTIPLEXED TRANSMISSION

Optical Fiber Communication Conference/National Fiber Optic Engineers Conference 2013, 2013
Space-division multiplexing allows scaling the per-fiber capacity beyond the nonlinear Shannon limit of legacy single-mode fibers. We review enabling technologies with a focus on SDM transmission systems enabled by multiple-input multiple-output digital signal processing.

Components For Space-Division Multiplexing

2017 European Conference on Optical Communication (ECOC), 2017
Amplifiers, spatial multiplexers, and routing elements that exploit spatial integration will reduce costs and complexity of future space-division multiplexed transmission systems. Managing spatial modes requires new components such as mode multiplexers, mixers, equalizers, and unscramblers.

Nonlinear Propagation in Fibers for Space Division Multiplexing

Conference on Lasers and Electro-Optics, 2017
We review the modeling of nonlinear propagation in fibers for Space Division Multiplexing (SDM), and discuss the impact of mode coupling and modal dispersion on the nonlinear interference between WDM channels of an SDM systems. We present an analytic model that is suitable for the efficient computation of the nonlinear interference noise power.

Impact of the crosstalk in space-division multiplexing

2017 19th International Conference on Transparent Optical Networks (ICTON), 2017
In this work the penalties induced by the crosstalk in case of optical networks exploiting space-division multiplexing and coherent detection are evaluated. Different QAM modulation formats are considered.
