Degree of Coherence in Space-Division Multiplexed Transmission
Journal of Lightwave Technology, 2014We generalize the concept of degree of polarization of single-mode fields to multi-mode fields by introducing a new parameter that we define degree of mutual coherence. The new definition enables characterizing by a single parameter the quality of the signal corrupted by various linear and nonlinear impairments at the output of an optical transmission ...

Space division multiplexing algorithms
2000 10th Mediterranean Electrotechnical Conference. Information Technology and Electrotechnology for the Mediterranean Countries. Proceedings. MeleCon 2000 (Cat. No.00CH37099), 2005The main goals in developing new wireless communication systems are increasing the transmission capacity and improving the spectrum efficiency. In this paper, spectrum efficiency and capacity improving techniques, captured under the name space division multiplexing (SDM), are proposed.

Space division multiplexing holography
Proceedings of the IEEE, 1969A technique is proposed for multiple information storage in a sampled hologram in long-wavelength holographies. An experiment on the proposed technique is conducted to construct a hologram using 15 kHz sound waves and to reconstruct images using laser light.

Optical technologies for space division multiplexing
2014 13th Workshop on Information Optics (WIO), 2014Many technological challenges have to be overcome before a cost and energy efficient fiber communication system based on space division multiplexing (SDM) can be realized. In this paper we review recent R&D efforts in developing optical components for SDM networks.

Photonic lantern spatial multiplexers in space-division multiplexing
2013 IEEE Photonics Society Summer Topical Meeting Series, 2013Photonic-lanterns are lossless spatial-multiplexers that scramble N signals onto the N modes of a multi-mode fiber without mode- dependent loss. They can scale to large N and have enabled transmission over a fiber supporting 12 spatial and polarization-modes.

Space-Division Multiplexing for PON Applications
Advanced Photonics 2016 (IPR, NOMA, Sensors, Networks, SPPCom, SOF), 2016The spatial degrees of freedom afforded in few-mode and/or multi-core fibers can potentially be utilized to improve the performance of passive-optical networks. Optical and signal-processing techniques for managing crosstalk for PON in a cost-effective manner are presented.

Next-generation fibers for space-division-multiplexed transmissions
2014 The European Conference on Optical Communication (ECOC), 2014This paper reviews the most recent advances on next-generation fibers for space-division-multiplexed transmissions. These fibers can be classified into different categories, depending on the way the inherent crosstalk issue is addressed, and have thus different characteristics and limitations.
