Structural insights into an engineered feruloyl esterase with improved MHET degrading properties

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
A feruloyl esterase was engineered to mimic key features of MHETase, enhancing the degradation of PET oligomers. Structural and computational analysis reveal how a point mutation stabilizes the active site and reshapes the binding cleft, expading substrate scope.

Antecedentes organizacionales de la calidad de servicio: un modelo de relaciones estructurales

open access: yesTourism & Management Studies, 2015
Diferentes modelos de calidad y gestión incluyen las percepciones de los clientes así como las de los gerentes y empleados de contacto. La calidad del servicio no puede ser entendida sin considerar el papel clave jugado por estos últimos.

Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.

Examining the Risk Perception-Disaster Preparedness Behavior Nexus in the Seismic Context of Bucharest

open access: yesInternational Journal of Disaster Risk Science
This research relied on an extended theory of planed behavior, introducing risk perception as a predictor of the willingness to implement earthquake preparedness behavior, and examining its relationships with the traditional components of the theory. The

Organizing the interface—Plasma membrane architecture and receptor dynamics in virus‐cell interactions

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Plasma membranes contain dynamic nanoscale domains that organize lipids and receptors. Because viruses operate at similar scales, this architecture shapes early infection steps, including attachment, receptor engagement, and entry. Using influenza A virus and HIV‐1 as examples, we highlight how receptor nanoclusters, multivalent glycan interactions ...

Epigenetic blind spots – the role of DNA methylation dynamics in stem cell‐based models of embryogenesis

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Embryo‐like structures (stembryos) are an innovative tool, but they are hindered by experimental variability and limited developmental potential. DNA methylation is crucial for mammalian development, but its status in stembryo models is poorly characterized.

Operationalizing the knowledge space: theory, methods and insights for Smart Specialisation

open access: yesRegional Studies, Regional Science, 2020
Focusing explicitly on the regional dimensions of technological change, this paper examines the technological evolution of Irish NUTS-3 regions. Employing an index of average relatedness, it is shown that over an extended 25-year period (1981–2005) that ...

The spatial dynamics of prion disease [PDF]

open access: yesProceedings of the Royal Society of London. Series B: Biological Sciences, 1998
An important component of the latency period of the transmissible spongiform encephalopathies (prion diseases) can be attributed to delays during the propagation of the infectious prion isoform, PrPSc, through peripheral nervous tissues. A growing body of data report that the host prion protein, PrPC, is required in both peripheral and central nervous ...

Biophysical approaches for studying viral entry

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Viruses infect all living organisms and have been responsible for major epidemics and pandemics. Their ongoing evolutionary battle with host defenses creates a constant need for improved tools to study viral behavior. Advancing methods to probe viral attachment, fusion, and genome release deepen our understanding of how infections begin and support the
