Fair Spatial Indexing: A paradigm for Group Spatial Fairness

open access: yesAdvances in database technology : proceedings. International Conference on Extending Database Technology, 2023
Machine learning (ML) is playing an increasing role in decision-making tasks that directly affect individuals, e.g., loan approvals, or job applicant screening. Significant concerns arise that, without special provisions, individuals from under-privileged backgrounds may not get equitable access to services and opportunities.

Structural insights into an engineered feruloyl esterase with improved MHET degrading properties

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
A feruloyl esterase was engineered to mimic key features of MHETase, enhancing the degradation of PET oligomers. Structural and computational analysis reveal how a point mutation stabilizes the active site and reshapes the binding cleft, expading substrate scope.

A local and regional spatial index for measuring three-dimensional urban compactness growth

open access: yes, 2017
The negative impacts resulting from urban sprawl are recognized as serious issues entailing environmental problems. Urban developments are moving towards a more compact form to mitigate many issues including pollution concerns, land depletion, and ...

Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.

QUANTIFYING EFFECTS OF CHANGING SPATIAL SCALE ON SPATIAL ENTROPY INDEX: USE OF FRACTAL DIMENSION [PDF]

open access: yesThe International Archives of the Photogrammetry, Remote Sensing and Spatial Information Sciences, 2019
Quantifying landscape heterogeneity and its organization at different scales is essential for understanding ecosystems and landscapes. Among hundreds of landscape metrics, entropy-related index represents an efficient tool to quantify and characterize ...

Study of the Agglomeration Characteristics of Cultivated Land in Underdeveloped Mountainous Areas Based on Spatial Auto-Correlation: A Case of Pengshui County, Chongqing, China

open access: yesLand, 2022
The economic and social orientation of cultivated land in underdeveloped mountainous areas is obvious. A study of the spatial agglomeration characteristics of cultivated land quality can provide guidance for regional economic and social development ...

Epigenetic blind spots – the role of DNA methylation dynamics in stem cell‐based models of embryogenesis

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Embryo‐like structures (stembryos) are an innovative tool, but they are hindered by experimental variability and limited developmental potential. DNA methylation is crucial for mammalian development, but its status in stembryo models is poorly characterized.

Septin 9 PB domains coordinate centrosome positioning and microtubule acetylation to control epithelial polarity

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Septin 9 polybasic domains couple phosphoinositide‐rich membrane binding to centrosome positioning, Golgi organization, and microtubule acetylation to control epithelial polarity. Their loss disrupts this axis, causing centrosome mispositioning, Golgi fragmentation, reduced microtubule acetylation, and polarity inversion via upregulation of the ...

Spatial Relationship between Land Use Patterns and Ecosystem Services Value—Case Study of Nanjing

open access: yesLand, 2022
The degree of land use reflects the progress of social and economic development; however, it also has a direct impact on land resources. Maximizing the ecosystem services of land resources in a limited space is a key issue in China’s rapid urbanization ...
