A step‐by‐step protocol for meiotic chromosome counts in flowering plants: A powerful and economical technique revisited

open access: yesApplications in Plant Sciences, 2020
Premise Counting chromosomes is a fundamental botanical technique, yet it is often intimidating and increasingly sidestepped. Once mastered, the basic protocol can be applied to a broad range of taxa and research questions.

Time after time – circadian clocks through the lens of oscillator theory

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Oscillator theory bridges physics and circadian biology. Damped oscillators require external drivers, while limit cycles emerge from delayed feedback and nonlinearities. Coupling enables tissue‐level coherence, and entrainment aligns internal clocks with environmental cues.

Species Recognition and Cryptic Species in the Tuber indicum Complex

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2011
Morphological delimitation of Asian black truffles, including Tuber himalayense, T. indicum, T. sinense, T. pseudohimalayense, T. formosanum and T. pseudoexcavatum, has remained problematic and even phylogenetic analyses have been controversial. In this study, we combined five years of field investigation in China with morphological study and DNA ...

Preliminary genetic evidence of two different populations of Opisthorchis viverrini in Lao PDR [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Opisthorchis viverrini is a major public health concern in Southeast Asia. Various reports have suggested that this parasite may represent a species complex, with genetic structure in the region perhaps being dictated by geographical factors and ...

The newfound relationship between extrachromosomal DNAs and excised signal circles

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Extrachromosomal DNAs (ecDNAs) contribute to the progression of many human cancers. In addition, circular DNA by‐products of V(D)J recombination, excised signal circles (ESCs), have roles in cancer progression but have largely been overlooked. In this Review, we explore the roles of ecDNAs and ESCs in cancer development, and highlight why these ...

Water diviners described: six new species of the Niphargus aquilex (Crustacea, Amphipoda) complex

open access: yesEuropean Journal of Taxonomy
With the onset of molecular taxonomy, it has been recognized that groundwater crustaceans in the family Niphargidae Bousfield, 1977 (Crustacea, Amphipoda) can demonstrate either highly variable or static phenotypes.

Distribution of bryophytes in China [PDF]

open access: yes, 1990
China is located in eastern Asia, between 18°-55°N and 74°-138°E. The total land area of about 9,600,000 km is divided into 30 administrative areas. The climate varies from subtropic in the south to temperate in the north. The topography is complex.

Inter-species variation in the oligomeric states of the higher plant Calvin cycle enzymes glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase and phosphoribulokinase [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
In darkened leaves the Calvin cycle enzymes glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase (GAPDH) and phosphoribulokinase (PRK) form a regulatory multi-enzyme complex with the small chloroplast protein CP12. GAPDH also forms a high molecular weight regulatory

An upstream open reading frame regulates expression of the mitochondrial protein Slm35 and mitophagy flux

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This study reveals how the mitochondrial protein Slm35 is regulated in Saccharomyces cerevisiae. The authors identify stress‐responsive DNA elements and two upstream open reading frames (uORFs) in the 5′ untranslated region of SLM35. One uORF restricts translation, and its mutation increases Slm35 protein levels and mitophagy.
