Non-conservative and conservative formulations of characteristics-based numerical reconstructions for incompressible flows. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2006
An investigation of characteristics-based (CB) schemes for solving the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations in conjunction with the artificial-compressibility approach, is presented.

Spectral characteristics and spatial smoothing of wind power – a case study of the Faroe Islands

open access: yesMeteorologische Zeitschrift, 2020
The spectral characteristics of wind power output in a region with complex topography is analysed. Data from six spatially distributed sites are used, having inter-site distances reaching up to almost 100 km.

Structures of mycobacterial 3‐methylcrotonyl‐CoA carboxylase reveal carrier‐domain translocation between catalytic sites

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Mycobacterial 3‐methylcrotonyl‐CoA carboxylase uses a mobile biotin‐carrying domain to shuttle a carboxyl group between two catalytic sites, enabling carboxylation of 3‐methylcrotonyl‐CoA during leucine breakdown. Cryo‐electron microscopy captures the carrier at both sites and reveals an inward loop movement that may prevent futile rebinding to the ...

Spectral characteristics of resting state networks

open access: yes, 2011
Resting state networks (RSNs), as imaged by functional MRI, are distributed maps of areas believed to be involved in the function of the "resting" brain, which appear in both resting and task data. The current dominant view is that such networks are associated with slow (∼0.015Hz), spontaneous fluctuations in the BOLD signal.

From junk to function — How weak selection in eukaryotes builds new parts and drives genomic complexity

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
How do genomes gain new functional parts? In eukaryotes, which tend to evolve under weak selection, much of the genome is junk. Palazzo and Qiu borrow the logic of Markov chains to show how non‐functional DNA becomes functional through the appearance of intermediate states, which arise due to epistasis, buffering, and biochemical messiness, allowing ...

The Shewanella oneidensis Fic enzyme SoFic targets the switch‐I region of EF‐Tu for AMPylation

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Fic enzymes mediate diverse post‐translational modifications across all domains of life, including AMPylation. Prokaryotic EF‐Tu can be AMPylated and deAMPylated by the conserved Fic enzyme SoFic. Structural and biochemical approaches were used to characterize the effect of AMPylation on EF‐Tu, SoFic's enzymatic activities, and the enzyme‐target ...

Estimating the spectral response function of the CASI-2

open access: yes, 2004
The spectral response function (SRF) of an instrument describes its relative sensitivity to energy of different wavelengths and is normally determined in the laboratory using a tunable laser or a scanning monochromator.

Chiral separation of chloroalkanes with the chromatographic column onboard Martian rovers

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Computer image of the Rosalind Franklin Rover of ESA's ExoMars mission. ExoMars is scheduled to land on planet Mars in Oxia Planum in 2029. This area represents an interesting spot to look for biosignatures. Investigations of ExoMars include measurement on molecular chirality. We show that chiral chloroalkanes, that have been identified on Mars, can be
