Brain α erythroid spectrin: identification, compartmentalization, and β spectrin associations

Brain Research, 1994
Using isoform and subunit specific antibodies we have determined the presence, localization, and beta spectrin associations of alpha erythroid spectrin, alpha SpI sigma*, as well as alpha non-erythroid spectrin, alpha SpII sigma 1, in mouse brain. Peptide specific antibodies against unique sequences within the beta SpII sigma 1, non-erythroid beta ...

Brain spectrin(240/235A): A novel astrocyte specific spectrin isoform

Brain Research Bulletin, 1989
We have previously demonstrated the existence of two distinct isoforms of spectrin in mammalian brain (23). Brain spectrin(240/235) is found primarily in neuronal axons and presynaptic terminals, and brain spectrin(240/235E) is located in neuronal cell bodies, dendrites and postsynaptic terminals, and oligodendrocytes.

β spectrinPRAGUE: a truncated β spectrin producing spectrin deficiency, defective spectrin heterodimer self‐association and a phenotype of spherocytic elliptocytosis

British Journal of Haematology, 1995
Summary. Spherocytic elliptocytosis is a phenotypic hybrid between hereditary spherocytosis (HS) and hereditary elliptocytosis (HE) characterized by the presence of spheroovalocytes and spherocytes which exhibit increased osmotic fragility, indicating a deficiency of surface area.

Gluing spectrin together

Blood, 2007
A malarial parasite protein stabilizes red cell membrane and inhibits further parasite invasion. The parasite Plasmodium falciparum is the cause for the most prevalent form of malaria, a disease that claims several million lives annually.

Spectrins

1999
Abstract First identified in the mammalian erythrocyte, spectrins are now recognized as ubiquitous proteins present in all metazoan organisms including plants. Because of this great diversity, a bewildering array of names, such as fodrin, calspectin, brain spectrin, spectrin G, lung spectrin, γ spectrin, 1W260/240, and so on, have been ...

Spectrin (Brain)

1996
Abstract Spectrin belongs to the family of actin-binding proteins. It is a structural protein associated with the cytoplasmic surface of the plasma membrane. It is composed of an a- and {3-subunit and was first defined in red blood cells. ft has been found in most metazoans including vertebrates and higher plants.

Spectrin extractability in blood storage

Transfusion, 1981
The extractability of spectrin from red blood cell membranes was measured both by dialysis against 1 mM EDTA for 44 hours and by incubation with 1 mM EDTA for 60 minutes. We confirmed that the extractability of spectrin is somewhat impaired when membranes are prepared from metabolically depleted erythrocytes, but the extent of impairment was ...

Phosphorylation and dephosphorylation of spectrin

Journal of Supramolecular Structure, 1978
AbstractThe phosphorylation of spectrin polypeptide 2 is thought to be involved in the metabolically dependent regulation of red cell shape and deformability. Spectrin phosphorylation is not affected by cAMP. The reaction in isolated membranes resembles the cAMP‐independent, salt‐stimulated phosphorylation of an exogenous substrate, casein, by enzyme(s)

[8B7 spectrin--a new member of spectrin family].

Zhongguo yi xue ke xue yuan xue bao. Acta Academiae Medicinae Sinicae, 2007
To analyze the nature of the protein encoded by 8B7cDNA (1 835 bp) and to examine the localization of the protein in cells. The nature of the protein was analyzed using Blastn, Blastp, and TMpred. Expressions of 8B7 mRNA in tissues and cells were examined by Northern blotting.

Evolution of the spectrin repeat

BioEssays, 1997
AbstractWe now know that the evolution of multidomain proteins has frequently involved genetic duplication events. These, however, are sometimes difficult to trace because of low sequence similarity between duplicated segments. Spectrin, the major component of the membrane skeleton that provides elasticity to the cell, contains tandemly repeated ...
