Casanovas are liars : behavioral syndromes, sperm competition risk, and the evolution of deceptive male mating behavior in live-bearing fishes [version 2; referees: 2 approved, 1 approved with reservations] [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
Male reproductive biology can by characterized through competition over mates as well as mate choice. Multiple mating and male mate choice copying, especially in internally fertilizing species, set the stage for increased sperm competition, i.e., sperm ...

The Landscape and Regulation of Histone Crotonylation in Mammalian Gametes and Early Embryos

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Histone crotonylation undergoes a genome‐wide transition from broad domains to canonical narrow peaks during minor zygotic genome activation (ZGA). This remodeling is required for proper major ZGA and blastocyst formation. Disruption of this transition by transcriptional inhibition, metabolic perturbation, or HDAC1 dysfunction impairs embryonic ...

The male to female ratio at birth [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
The factors that influence the male to female ratio at birth are legion. Males are usually born in excess and stress decreases the ratio while wellbeing and good health tends to increase it.

Paternal Caffeine Exposure Programs Offspring Stress Vulnerability via Sperm Dlk1‐Dio3 Imprinting‐Directed Remodeling of a Novel Neural Circuit

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
The study elucidates that paternal preconception stress can drive offspring hyperresponsivity of the stress system via hypomethylation of a specific DNA region in sperm. This key link is confirmed in a cohort of prospective fathers: the epigenetic alteration is associated with elevated stress hormone levels.

Natural Resistance to Ovarian Hyperstimulation Syndrome in Estrildid Finches Reveals Macrophage GPR183 as a Potential Therapeutic Target

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Ovarian macrophage depletion reverses OHSS resistance in estrildid finches and exacerbates OHSS symptoms in rats. Activating macrophage GPR183 alleviates OHSS by reducing pro‐inflammatory factors, increasing immunomodulatory molecules, remodeling CD44/SDC4‐mediated communication, and restoring immune homeostasis.

Sperm Selection through Microvesicle-Mediated ChemotaxisInduced by Follicular Fluid and Cumulus Cells [PDF]

open access: yesCell Journal
Objective: Selecting the most competent sperm is crucial for improving the success of intracytoplasmic sperm injection(ICSI). Chemotaxis-based sperm selection may facilitate the selection of spermatozoa with superior motility andfertilization capability.

Absence of Neu5Gc and Presence of Anti-Neu5Gc Antibodies in Humans-An Evolutionary Perspective. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
The glycocalyx of human cells differs from that of many other mammals by the lack of the sialic acid N-glycolylneuraminic acid (Neu5Gc) and increased abundance of its precursor N-acetylneuraminic acid (Neu5Ac).

The Comparison of HA Binding and Zeta Methods Efficiency in Selection of Sperm with Normal Morphology and Intact Chromatin

open access: yesمجله دانشکده پزشکی اصفهان, 2009
Background: Sperm selection for ICSI is based on morphology and motility, but these parameters may not relevant chromatin integrity. One of the sperm selection methods for ICSI is based on sperm functional characteristics.

Proteins involved in motility and sperm-egg interaction evolve more rapidly in mouse spermatozoa.

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2014
Proteomic studies of spermatozoa have identified a large catalog of integral sperm proteins. Rapid evolution of these proteins may underlie adaptive changes of sperm traits involved in different events leading to fertilization, although the selective ...
