Hydrodynamic phase-locking of swimming microorganisms [PDF]
Some microorganisms, such as spermatozoa, synchronize their flagella when swimming in close proximity. Using a simplified model (two infinite, parallel, two-dimensional waving sheets), we show that phase-locking arises from hydrodynamics forces alone, and has its origin in the front-back asymmetry of the geometry of their flagellar waveform.

Spermatozoa: A Historical Perspective.
ABSTRACT: The 100,000th scientific article on the subject of spermatozoa was recently published. Numerous studies evaluated the characteristics of this important cell that led to tremendous discoveries. Since its first observation and description in 1677, many important characteristics have been described regarding this highly fascinating gamete.

Bio-Functional Sperm Parameters: Does Age Matter?
The evaluation of biofunctional sperm parameters can explain some cases of idiopathic male infertility. Among these, sperm DNA fragmentation (fDNA) is the most studied biofunctional sperm parameter.

Structural Abnormalities of Spermatozoa in Triploid Gynogenetic Crucian Carp (Carassius auratus)
The spermatozoa of triploid gynogenetic crucian carp (Carassius auratus) (3nDTCC) possess a spermatogenesis process with a normal genetic background. However, the genetic materials of these spermatozoa do not completely inherit gynogenetic progeny in ...

The long-time dynamics of two hydrodynamically-coupled swimming cells [PDF]
Swimming micro-organisms such as bacteria or spermatozoa are typically found in dense suspensions, and exhibit collective modes of locomotion qualitatively different from that displayed by isolated cells. In the dilute limit where fluid-mediated interactions can be treated rigorously, the long-time hydrodynamics of a collection of cells result from ...

Mitochondria in teleost spermatozoa
There is an extraordinary diversity of reproductive modes in teleost and this variability is related to the phylogenetic relationships and adaption to very different biotopes. As in all vertebrates, sperm is produced as the end product of the process of spermatogenesis, and regarding teleost the spermatozoa lack an acrosome in almost all species and ...

Species difference in the expression of Fas and Fas ligand in mature mammalian spermatozoa
Although it has been proposed that the Fas and Fas ligand (FasL) may protect ejaculated spermatozoa against apoptosis induced by lipoperoxidative damage and against lymphocytes present in the female genital tract, studies reported conflicting results on ...
