Inertial modes in near-spherical geometries [PDF]

open access: yesGeophysical Journal International, 2018
We propose a numerical method to compute the inertial modes of a container with near-spherical geometry based on the fully spectral discretisation of the angular and radial directions using spherical harmonics and Gegenbauer polynomial expansion respectively.

A Demonstration of Underwater Bubble Capture by the Fundamental Acoustic Mode in Spherical Geometry

open access: yesWalailak Journal of Science and Technology, 2011
Nowadays, scientific demonstrations have become a crucial part of scientific learning. Acoustic waves are normally demonstrated in air via Kundt’s tube, but a physical demonstration for underwater acoustic waves is still lacking.

Transferrin receptor 1‐mediated iron uptake supports thermogenic activation in human cervical‐derived adipocytes

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
In this study, we found that human cervical‐derived adipocytes maintain intracellular iron level by regulating the expression of iron transport‐related proteins during adrenergic stimulation. Melanotransferrin is predicted to interact with transferrin receptor 1 based on in silico analysis.

On the Number of Spherical Circles Needed to Cover a Spherical Convex Domain

open access: yesMathematics
In this manuscript, we study the coverage of convex spherical domains by spherical circles. This question can be applied to the location of satellites, weather balloons, radio towers, etc.

Structural insights into an engineered feruloyl esterase with improved MHET degrading properties

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
A feruloyl esterase was engineered to mimic key features of MHETase, enhancing the degradation of PET oligomers. Structural and computational analysis reveal how a point mutation stabilizes the active site and reshapes the binding cleft, expading substrate scope.

On the Geometry of Spherical Trochoids

open access: yesKoG, 2023
We provide a synthetic study of the top-views of spherical trochoids. These projections turn out to be higher trochoids, i.e., curves generated by the superposition of more than two rotations. Special shapes of these trochoids show up for special choices of the spherical radii of the rolling circles.

Residual tail twisting in ascidian larvae is stabilized by asymmetric myofibrils that resist bilateral symmetry restoration

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Ascidian Ciona larvae initially show strong clockwise tail twisting, which is largely corrected during development. However, a small residual twist remains. This study shows that organized helical myofibrils in tail muscles mechanically stabilize this residual asymmetry, preventing complete restoration of bilateral symmetry and revealing how embryos ...

A three-dimensional finite element model of cAMP signals

open access: yesForces in Mechanics, 2021
This paper presents a three-dimensional finite element model for cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP) signaling. Governing equations for the synthesis, diffusion, and degradation of cAMP were numerically implemented using the finite element method ...

An Application of Spherical Geometry to Hyperkähler Slices [PDF]

open access: yesCanadian Journal of Mathematics, 2020
AbstractThis work is concerned with Bielawski’s hyperkähler slices in the cotangent bundles of homogeneous affine varieties. One can associate such a slice with the data of a complex semisimple Lie group $G$, a reductive subgroup $H\subseteq G$, and a Slodowy slice $S\subseteq \mathfrak{g}:=\text{Lie}(G)$, defining it to be the hyperkähler quotient of $

An unexpected alternative viologen electron mediator site in tungsten‐containing formate dehydrogenase

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
An unexpected alternative interaction site for ethyl viologen was identified in formate dehydrogenase 1 from Methylorubrum extorquens. Combined mutagenesis, kinetic analysis, and docking revealed that aromatic residues near an iron–sulfur cluster enable flavin mononucleotide‐independent electron transfer, offering a framework for engineering improved ...
