Spherical ultrasonic motor for pipe inspection robot

IEEE ISR 2013, 2012
We present a pipe inspection robot using a newly developed spherical ultrasonic motor (SUSM) as a camera actuator. The novel SUSM has improved the range of movement compared to previous SUSMs, and the robot can point a camera in any direction. In this study, we determined a method for controlling the rotational direction and strategic control from the ...

Spherical Ultrasonic Motor for Space

2016
In resent years, space satellites have been widely used in the world. They cause the space debris, which has become a problem because they may collide each other in space. In our study, we have developed a Spherical UltraSonic Motor (SUSM) with 3 DOF in space use to drive the satellite thruster and resolve the space debris problem.

Control method of a spherical ultrasonic motor

Proceedings 2003 IEEE/ASME International Conference on Advanced Intelligent Mechatronics (AIM 2003), 2004
In this paper, we propose a control method for controlling an arbitrary orientation of a rotor of a spherical ultrasonic motor (SUSM) by using a magnetized rotor and Hall devices. The arbitrary orientation of the magnetized rotor is determined by detecting the output voltage of the magnetic pole axis measured by Hall devices embedded in the center of ...

Design of a novel ultrasonic spherical motor

2000 IEEE Ultrasonics Symposium. Proceedings. An International Symposium (Cat. No.00CH37121), 2002
This paper presents a novel ultrasonic spherical motor. With only a single moving part, this spherical motor is capable of providing 2-DOF motions required for micro satellite and space robot actuation. The operating principle of the motor is explicated and an initial prototype was fabricated and tested.

A two-degree of freedom spherical motor

2016 International Symposium on Electrical Engineering (ISEE), 2016
In this paper, a direct-drive spherical motor to produce two-degree of freedom rotations has been proposed. The structure and prototype of the motor are given and the basic principles are described, including the operation principle and mathematic theories, etc.

Development of Spherical Ultrasonic Motor for Space

Applied Mechanics and Materials, 2014
In resent years, due to advances in science technology, space satellites have made progress. So, the presence of space debris has become problem in the world because they may collide each other. In our study, we have developed Spherical Ultrasonic Motor (SUSM) for space use with 3 DOF to drive the satellite thruster and resolve it.

Development and design of spherical induction motors

Proceedings of the IEE Part A: Power Engineering, 1959
The first major development described is concerned with the arrangement of stator blocks. A previous paper described a system in which four stator blocks were arranged around the rotor. The new layout involves the use of only two blocks containing pre-skewed slots.

Design Considerations of a Permanent Magnetic Spherical Motor Using Spherical Harmonics

IEEE Transactions on Magnetics, 2014
A design consideration of a permanent magnet spherical motor (PMSM) is presented based on spherical harmonic (SH) analysis. By analogy with fractional-slot rotary machines, the PMSM with eight electromagnets/six permanent magnets (PMs) (per layer) dual-winding structure is chosen to improve control flexibility and fault tolerance ability that has ...

Development and control of a three DOF spherical induction motor

2013 IEEE International Conference on Robotics and Automation, 2013
This paper reports, to our knowledge, the first spherical induction motor (SIM) operating with closed loop control. The motor can produce up to 4 Nm of torque along arbitrary axes with continuous speeds up to 300 rpm. The motor's rotor is a two-layer copper-over-iron spherical shell. The stator has four independent inductors that generate thrust forces

Stator design of a new type of spherical piezoelectric motor

IEEE Transactions on Ultrasonics, Ferroelectrics and Frequency Control, 2010
The stator design of a new type of spherical motor driven by piezoelectric actuators is developed. A curved piezoelectric actuator is designed to attach to the spherical surface. A series of the curved piezoelectric actuators is laid in a line around a spherical surface.
