Patterns of Occurrence of the Platyhelminth Parasites of the Wild Bullseye Puffer (Sphoeroides annulatus) Off Sinaloa, Mexico

Journal of Parasitology, 2004
This study provides basic information on the occurrence of platyhelminths in the wild bullseye puffer (Sphoeroides annulatus) from Sinaloa, Mexico. Specimens of pufferfish were collected from 2 localities: Teacapan (n = 161) and Mazatlan (n = 66). Six species of platyhelminths were recorded: 2 monogeneans (Diclidophoridae: Heterobothrium ecuadori and ...

Reproductive biology of the bullseye puffer Sphoeroides annulatus: Gonadosomatic index and its suitability for estimating length at maturity

Journal of Fish Biology, 2022
AbstractThis study aimed to describe updated information on the basic reproductive biology of Sphoeroides annulatus females and potential use of the gonadosomatic index as input data to assess length at 50% maturity () and identify the breeding season.

Expression of a glycoprotein hormone receptor gene in the ovary of the bullseye puffer (Sphoeroides annulatus)

Fish Physiology and Biochemistry, 2003
A fragment of a glycoprotein hormone receptor (GpHR) gene was isolated from the ovary of the bullseye puffer. This cDNA fragment showed similarity to the thyrotropin (TSH) and gonadotropin (LH and FSH) receptors. GpHR mRNA expression in the ovary gradually increased during oocyte maturation.

Comparison of egg quality between wild and captive bullseye puffer (Sphoeroides annulatus)

Fish Physiology and Biochemistry, 2003
The quality of eggs from wild and captive bullseye puffer were compared. No significant differences were found between percentage hatch, percentage fertilization or egg size for eggs from wild and captive bullseye puffer.

Partial cloning and expression of the cyclin B gene in the ovary of the bullseye puffer (Sphoeroides annulatus)

Journal of Experimental Zoology Part A: Comparative Experimental Biology, 2003
AbstractThe bullseye puffer is a marine fish species with great potential for aquaculture in Mexico, and the understanding of its reproductive physiology at every level of biological organization is essential in order to succeed. Several molecules orchestrate the complex process of oocyte maturation and spawning.
