Biomimetic Adhesion/Detachment Using Layered Polymers with Light‐Induced Rapid Shape Changes

open access: yesAngewandte Chemie, EarlyView.
Geckos achieve rapid adhesion and detachment through their hierarchically structured toe pads. Inspired by this, we developed a crosslinked polymer film with a nanoscale layered structure that undergoes high‐speed, reversible expansion, and contraction under UV light.

Spider Diversity Pattern and Community Composition in the South Eastern Nigeria: An Analysis of Habitat Differences

open access: yesJournal of Applied Sciences and Environmental Management, 2019
Spider diversity plays an important role in the balance of nature. Thus, a study on the diversity of spiders was carried out in Awka, Anambra State in the South Eastern Nigeria from January, 2018 to June, 2018. Spiders were collected from three habitats

SPIDERS' NESTS [PDF]

open access: yesThe Canadian Entomologist
The genus Theridionconstruct beautiful silken nests for the protection of their eggs. I have collected what I take to be the nests of three species in Canada. They are generally found under the bank of decayed forest trees. Another which I found on an old fence at Quebec, although not constructed of silk, its form, in my opinion, is sufficient to class

AInsectID Version 1.1: An Insect Species Identification Software Based on the Transfer Learning of Deep Convolutional Neural Networks

open access: yesAdvanced Intelligent Discovery, EarlyView.
This paper describes the basis for AInsectID Version 1, a GUI‐operable open‐source insect species identification, color processing, and image analysis software. This paper discusses our methods of algorithmic development, coupled to rigorous machine training used to enable high levels of validation accuracy.

Spiders and their Kin: An Investigation of Stanley's Chromatic Symmetric Function for Spiders and Related Graphs [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2018
We study the chromatic symmetric functions of graph classes related to spiders, namely generalized spider graphs (line graphs of spiders), and what we call horseshoe crab graphs. We show that no two generalized spiders have the same chromatic symmetric function, thereby extending the work of Martin, Morin and Wagner.

Ultrasensitive Ultrasoft Buckled Crack‐Based Sensor for Respiration Measurement and Enhanced Human–Machine Interface

open access: yesAdvanced Intelligent Systems, EarlyView.
The Buckled, Ultrasoft, Crack‐based, Large strain, EpiDermal (BUCKLED) sensor is a flexible, ultrasensitive wearable strain sensor designed to precisely measure subtle skin deformations. By utilizing a buckled structure to enhance compliance integrating crack‐based sensing mechanisms, it improves accuracy in applications like respiratory monitoring ...

UP3: Unsupervised Predictive Path Planner for Mobile Robots in Unknown Environment

open access: yesAdvanced Intelligent Systems, EarlyView.
In this article, an unsupervised learning‐based predictive path planning framework UP3 for mobile robots is introduced. The framework employs attention‐based path optimization, control barrier functions, and a deep constraint correction module. UP3 allows the robot to use local observation to generate smooth, safe, and collision‐free path points toward

A conceptual model for co‐developing a culturally tailored intervention for Latina immigrant caregivers of children with disabilities

open access: yesAmerican Journal of Community Psychology, EarlyView.
Abstract The growing diversity of the U.S. population, partly due to immigration, has called attention to scholars and practitioners to attend to immigrants' cultural beliefs, values, and ways of doing when designing interventions to promote health and wellbeing.
