Photonic Time Crystals and Time‐Varying Electromagnetic Metamatter: A New Direction for Ultrafast Tunable Photonic and Microwave Materials and Devices

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Photonic time crystals (PTCs) are systems in which electromagnetic parameters are modulated periodically in time, producing momentum bandgaps via temporal scattering rather than spatial Bragg processes. This review examines the theoretical frameworks, modeling, and computational tools for time‐varying media, and summarizes experimental demonstrations ...

Orbital chirality of light in few-mode step-index optical fibers

open access: yesAPL Photonics
A physical system is considered chiral when it can be distinguished from its mirror image, regardless of the applied translation and rotation. An electromagnetic wave can be chiral through its two essential forms of angular momenta: spin and orbital ...

Reconfigurable, Temperature Resilient Phase‐Change Metasurfaces Fabricated via High Throughput Nanoimprinting Lithography

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT The combination of metasurfaces with chalcogenide phase‐change materials is a highly promising route toward the development of multifunctional and reconfigurable nanophotonic devices. However, their transition into real‐world devices is hindered by several technological challenges. This includes, amongst others, the lack of large area photonic

Four no-go theorems on the existence of spin and orbital angular momentum of massless bosons

open access: yesSciPost Physics
The past decades have seen substantial interest in the so-called orbital angular momentum (OAM) of light, driven largely by its diverse range of applications.

Hierarchical Artificial Muscle with Nonlinear Elasticity for Antagonistic and Cyclic Robotics

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
We construct hierarchical muscles by plying nylon fibers around a heating wire. The hierarchical muscle shows a J‐shaped passive curve, which shows benefit in antagonistic muscle pair and work accumulation mechanism. We also develop a computational, first‐principle model to understand the physics of both active actuation stroke and passive J‐curve ...

Orbital angular momentum conservation in Brillouin light scattering within a ferromagnetic sphere

open access: yesNew Journal of Physics, 2018
Magnetostatic modes supported by a ferromagnetic sphere have been known as the Walker modes, each of which possesses an orbital angular momentum as well as a spin angular momentum along a static magnetic field.

Nonrelativistic Spin Current Generated Unconventional Spin Hall Magnetoresistance in Altermagnetic RuO2

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
It is reported that the unconventional spin Hall magnetoresistance generated from nonrelativistic spin currents in RuO2 is capable of accurately detecting spin current polarization and disentangling the T̂$\hat{T}$‐odd and T̂$\hat{T}$‐even components of a spin current.
