Inter-species variation in the oligomeric states of the higher plant Calvin cycle enzymes glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase and phosphoribulokinase [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
In darkened leaves the Calvin cycle enzymes glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase (GAPDH) and phosphoribulokinase (PRK) form a regulatory multi-enzyme complex with the small chloroplast protein CP12. GAPDH also forms a high molecular weight regulatory

Microwave‐Assisted One‐Pot Synthesis of Alkyl Levulinates From Post‐Harvest Vegetable Waste

open access: yesAdvanced Sustainable Systems, EarlyView.
Vegetable waste is valorized through Soxhlet extraction using H₂O₂ and heteropolyacid (HPA), followed by material characterization (XRD, FTIR, TGA, DSC). A microwave‐assisted reaction at 170 °C for 30 min with HPA and alcohol yields bio‐based esters.

Deep learning-based laser weed control compared to conventional herbicide application across three vegetable production systems. [PDF]

open access: yesPest Manag Sci
In 2024, trials in New Jersey and New York evaluated the effectiveness of laser weeding with a Carbon Robotics unit compared with herbicides on beets, spinach, and peas. Results demonstrated that laser weeding was as effective or superior to herbicides in controlling weeds, reducing biomass by ≥97% and boosting crop growth by ≥30%.

The SlDOF9‐SlSWEET17 Module: a Switch for Controlling Sugar Distribution Between Nematode Induced Galls and Roots in Tomato

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Root‐knot nematode (RKN) disease seriously affects the yield and quality of vegetable crops. SlDOF9‐SlSWEET17 model helps plants resist RKN infection during early stage by switching off the sugar transport capacity of other SlSWEET proteins that are hijacked by RKNs.

Analysis of the Use of Cylindrospermopsin and/or Microcystin-Contaminated Water in the Growth, Mineral Content, and Contamination of Spinacia oleracea and Lactuca sativa [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
Cyanobacteria and cyanotoxins constitute a serious environmental and human health problem. Moreover, concerns are raised with the use of contaminated water in agriculture and vegetable production as this can lead to food contamination and human exposure ...

Hydrogen‐Producing Catalysts Based on Ferredoxin Scaffolds

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Selected plant‐type ferredoxins that lack their natural [2Fe‐2S] clusters functionally bind a hydrogenase active site cofactor and act as hydrogenases themselves. In combination with photosystem I, the light‐dependent H₂ evolution almost matches the H₂ production rates of the natural system.

The Effect of VP3 Biofertilizer and Compost Application on Red Spinach (Amaranthus dubius) and Green Spinach (Amaranthus viridis) Yield and Quality

open access: yesJournal of Tropical Life Science
VP3 biofertilizer is a biological agent that has been formulated in previous research. It was applied once with compost and has been tested on red spinach and green spinach in the greenhouse to see its effect on yield and quality (chlorophyll content ...

In Situ Assembly of Fluorogenic RNA for Screening Natural Anti‐Liver Fibrosis Products via Dynamic Visualization of COL1A1 mRNA

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
This study introduces an in situ assembly of fluorogenic RNA approach for screening natural anti‐liver fibrosis compounds and dynamic visualization of endogenous COL1A1 mRNA in live cells. It offers a simple, cost‐effective approach of visualizing RNA dynamics and conducting drug screening in live cells, presenting a significant potential for the ...

THE COMPOSITION OF SPINACH FAT [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Biological Chemistry, 1929
Spinach contains a fat of great interest. In 1919, it was shown by Osborne and Mendel(1) that spinach is richer in the fat-soluble vitamins than most vegetables. Considerable work has been done since then to differentiate between the growth-producing and antirachitic factors in this fat, thus focusing attention on the unsaponifiable extract of spinach.
