Pathophysiology of Spinal and Bulbar Muscular Atrophy

Spinal and bulbar muscular atrophy (SBMA) is an X-linked, adult-onset motor neuronopathy that is caused by the expansion of a CAG trinucleotide repeat within the coding region of the androgen receptor gene. The disease affects males almost exclusively, although mildly affected females have been reported (1).
