Low doses of the organic insecticide spinosad trigger lysosomal defects, elevated ROS, lipid dysregulation, and neurodegeneration in flies

open access: yeseLife, 2022
Large-scale insecticide application is a primary weapon in the control of insect pests in agriculture. However, a growing body of evidence indicates that it is contributing to the global decline in population sizes of many beneficial insect species ...

The first RNAi‐based biopesticide approved in the United States: regulatory implications for the European Union – the case of Ledprona (Calantha™)

open access: yesPest Management Science, EarlyView.
The approval of the RNA interference‐based biopesticide Ledprona (Calantha™) in the USA marks a milestone for RNA‐based crop protection. We discuss the regulatory implications for the European Union, highlighting opportunities, challenges, and the need for adapted risk assessment frameworks for RNA‐based plant protection products.

Validation of a novel bioassay method for the evaluation of the activity of slow‐acting insecticides on tomato borer Phthorimaea absoluta

open access: yesPest Management Science, EarlyView.
Extended bioassays revealed that azadirachtin and spirotetramat show strong delayed effects against Phthorimaea absoluta, underestimated by the standard Insecticide Resistance Action Committee (IRAC) method 022 protocol. Incorporating long‐term exposures is essential to accurately assess slow‐acting insecticides and improve resistance management ...

Monitoring Resistance to Spinosad in the Melon Fly (Bactrocera cucurbitae) in Hawaii and Taiwan

open access: yesThe Scientific World Journal, 2012
Spinosad is a natural insecticide with desirable qualities, and it is widely used as an alternative to organophosphates for control of pests such as the melon fly, Bactrocera cucurbitae (Coquillett). To monitor the potential for development of resistance,

Reduced fitness cost accounts for the stability of a malathion‐resistant heterogeneous duplication haplotype in Ceratitis capitata field populations

open access: yesPest Management Science, EarlyView.
Malathion resistance in Spanish field populations of Ceratitis capitata is associated with a point mutation (R allele) and a heterogeneous duplication (RS haplotype) of the Ccace2 gene. The R allele imposes a higher fitness cost than the RS haplotype under laboratory and field conditions. An evolutionary model supports the stability of the RS haplotype

Enhanced triacylglycerol metabolism contributes to the efficient biosynthesis of spinosad in Saccharopolyspora spinosa

open access: yesSynthetic and Systems Biotechnology
Triacylglycerol (TAG) is crucial for antibiotic biosynthesis derived from Streptomyces, as it serves as an important carbon source. In this study, the supplementation of exogenous TAG led to a 3.92-fold augmentation in spinosad production.

Spinosad and the tomato borer Tuta absoluta: a bioinsecticide, an invasive pest threat, and high insecticide resistance.

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2014
The introduction of an agricultural pest species into a new environment is a potential threat to agroecosystems of the invaded area. The phytosanitary concern is even greater if the introduced pest's phenotype expresses traits that will impair the ...

Evaluating larvicide performance against Culicoides sonorensis in semi‐field conditions

open access: yesPest Management Science, EarlyView.
This study evaluated the efficacy of larvicide products against Culicoides sonorensis populations under controlled semi‐field conditions. Larvicide efficacy against C. sonorensis declined over time, in different environmental conditions. In particular, precipitation and habitat disturbance influenced residual performance. Abstract BACKGROUND Culicoides

Field resistance to spinosad in western flower thrips Frankliniella occidentalis (Thysanoptera: Thripidae)

open access: yesJournal of Integrative Agriculture, 2016
The western flower thrips, Frankliniella occidentalis, is one of the most destructive sucking pests of vegetables, fruits and ornamental crops in China. Spinosad is one of the most commonly used insecticides to manage thrips.
