Magnetic fields in spiral galaxies [PDF]

open access: yesThe Astronomy and Astrophysics Review, 1990
Radio synchrotron emission is a powerful tool to study the strength and structure of magnetic fields in galaxies. Unpolarized synchrotron emission traces isotropic turbulent fields which are strongest in spiral arms and bars (20-30 μG) and in central starburst regions (50-100 μG).

The Primordial Origin Model of Magnetic Fields in Spiral Galaxies

open access: yes, 2010
We propose a primordial-origin model for the composite configurations of global magnetic fields in spiral galaxies. We show that uniform tilted magnetic field wound up into a rotating disk galaxy can evolve into composite magnetic configurations ...

The curious case of J113924.74+164144.0: a possible new group of galaxies at z = 0.0693

open access: yes, 2010
J113924.74+164144.0 is an interesting galaxy at z = 0.0693, i.e. D_L ~ 305 Mpc, with tidal-tail-like extended optical features on both sides. There are two neighbouring galaxies, a spiral galaxy J113922.85+164136.3 which has a strikingly similar 'tidal ...

Magnetic-Field Vector Maps of Nearby Spiral Galaxies

open access: yesGalaxies, 2019
We present a method for determining the directions of magnetic-field vectors in a spiral galaxy using two synchrotron polarization maps, an optical image, and a velocity field.

THE ELLIPTICITIES OF GALAXIES IN GALAXY CLUSTERS OF DIFFERENT MORPHOLOGICAL TYPE

open access: yesOdessa Astronomical Publications, 2014
The distribution of galaxy ellipticities was analyzed for 207 rich PF galaxy clusters found in the Munster Red Sky Survey Galaxy Catalogue. Clusters with BM types from a comparison with the ACO catalogue were also classified on the new scheme.

Morphology and Kinematics of the Gas in M51: How Interaction with NGC 5195 Has Molded the Structure of Its Arms

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal
The Whirlpool Galaxy is a well-studied grand design galaxy with two major spiral arms, and a large satellite NGC 5195. The arms both show long uniform sections with perturbations (“kinks” or sharp turns) in specific regions.

The Impacts of Bars, Spirals, and Bulge Size on Gas-phase Metallicity Gradients in MaNGA Galaxies

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal
As galaxies evolve over time, the orbits of their constituent stars are expected to change in size and shape, moving stars away from their birth radius. Radial gas flows are also expected. Spiral arms and bars in galaxies are predicted to help drive this

Surface Photometry of Spiral Galaxy NGC 5005 and Elliptical Galaxy NGC 4278

open access: yesمجلة بغداد للعلوم, 2018
Two galaxies have been chosen, spiral galaxy NGC 5005 and elliptical galaxy NGC 4278 to study their photometric properties by using surface photometric techniques with griz-Filters. Observations are obtained from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS).
