Spiropyran Main‐Chain Conjugated Polymers

Macromolecular Rapid Communications, 2012
AbstractThe first main‐chain conjugated copolymers based on alternating spiropyran (SP) and 9,9‐dioctylfluorene (F8) units synthesized via Suzuki polycondensation (SPC) are presented. The reaction conditions of SPC are optimized to obtain materials of type P(para‐SP‐F8) with appreciably high molecular weights up to Mw ≈ 100 kg mol−1. 13C NMR is used to

Spiropyrans as molecular optical switches

Photochemical & Photobiological Sciences, 2010
Optical microscopes use visible light and an arrangement of lenses to provide us with magnified images of small samples. Combined with efficient fluorescent probes and highly sensitive fluorescence detection techniques they allow the non-invasive 3D study of subcellular structures even in living cells or tissue. However, optical microscopes are subject

Ultrafast Bidirectional Photoswitching of a Spiropyran

Journal of the American Chemical Society, 2010
We report on bidirectional photochemical switching of 6,8-dinitro-1',3',3'-trimethylspiro[2H-1-benzopyran-2,2'-indoline] (6,8-dinitro-BIPS) between the ring-closed spiropyran and the ring-open merocyanine form. This is studied by femtosecond three-color pump-repump-probe experiments. Both ring opening and ring closure are photoinduced. Completion of an

Spiropyran-Functionalized Hydrogels

2014
Photoresponsive actuators composed of a hydrogel functionalized with spiropyran are described. The hydrogel exhibits drastic shrinking in rapid response to blue light irradiation in acidic aqueous systems, and is examined for the application of several photoresponsive actuator systems.

Spiropyran-multifaceted chromic compounds

2022
Since the discovery of photochromism of the spiropyrans already in the 1950s, they have played a key role in the development of molecular photochemistry and especially in their application in materials and devices. In this chapter we will focus on the properties of spiropyrans and their response to a wide range of stimuli including protonation, and ...

Photocontraction of Liquid Spiropyran-Merocyanine Films

Science, 1984
Amorphous films of a photochromic spiropyran containing a mesogenic group melt, when exposed to heat together with irradiation, to yield a red fluid. This fluid contains aggregates of merocyanine molecules and exhibits marked contraction under light illumination.
