Solid-Phase Synthesis of Photochromic Spiropyrans

[reaction: see text] A convenient solid-phase synthesis of spiropyrans is described. A succinate linker was employed, which allows base-catalyzed cleavage of the desired photochromophore derivatized with a succinimide. Excellent yields and purities were obtained for the compounds that comprise a library of 23 spiropyrans.

Theoretical study of spiropyran–merocyanine thermal isomerization

Quantum mechanical computations at DFT level were carried out on the processes involved in the thermal reaction SP¡ME, where SP is the nitro-substituted spirobenzopyran (1',3'-dihydro-1',3',3'-trimethyl-6-nitro-spiro[2H-1-benzopyran-2,2'- [2H]indole]) in the closed form and ME is the corresponding open form.

Abstract It has been shown, that in the ground state the Cspiro−O bond, which is broken upon photoexcitation, is weakened and elongated because of specific orbital n-s* interactions. They become stronger in excited photochemically active state, thus facilitating the rupture of this bond.
