Functional Silver‐Loaded Porous Composite Scaffold for Bone Tissue Bacterial Infection

open access: yesAdvanced NanoBiomed Research, EarlyView.
In the current study, a AgNP‐loaded gelatin/β‐tricalcium phosphate composite scaffold was developed. Its interconnected porous structure facilitated cell adhesion and proliferation while enhancing osteogenic differentiation‐related gene expression to support bone regeneration.

Early synapsids neurosensory diversity revealed by CT and synchrotron scanning

open access: yesThe Anatomical Record, EarlyView.
Abstract Non‐mammaliaform synapsids (NMS) represent the closest relatives of today's mammals among the early amniotes. Exploring their brain and nervous system is key to understanding how mammals evolved. Here, using CT and Synchrotron scanning, we document for the first time three extreme cases of neurosensory and behavioral adaptations that probe ...

Functional morphology of the pharyngeal teeth of the ocean sunfish, Mola mola

open access: yesThe Anatomical Record, EarlyView.
Abstract Many fish use a set of pharyngeal jaws in their throat to aid in prey capture and processing, particularly of large or complex prey. In this study—combining dissection, CT scanning, histology, and performance testing—we demonstrate a novel use of pharyngeal teeth in the ocean sunfish (Mola mola), a species for which pharyngeal jaw anatomy had ...

The laparoscopic sponge [PDF]

open access: possibleSurgical Endoscopy, 2003
Hemorrhage and spillage of enteric contents during laparoscopic surgery can be problematic and obscure the operative field. Although the suction device can often clear the field, we have found that use of a sponge is often more efficient and effective. An unrolled 4 x 4 sponge can be introduced down a 10-mm port without difficulty.

The Sponge Pump

Journal of Theoretical Biology, 1994
Abstract The sponge pump was analysed and compared with the choanoflagellate pump in order to identify prerequisite properties of the basic pump units which have enabled the development of large sponges. The comparative pump analysis was based on experimentally measured back-pressure pumping-rate characteristics of the demosponge Haliclona urceolus

Sponges

2009
A total of 127 species of sponges distributed in two classes, 14 orders, 42 families, and 72 genera are reported for Costa Rica in this part. Sixty-five species from the Caribbean coast are included here, belonging to 1 class, 10 orders, 29 families, and 45 genera; and 62 species in 2 classes, 13 orders, 31 families, and 44 genera from the Pacific ...

Sponge

Proceedings of the sixteenth international conference on Architectural support for programming languages and operating systems, 2011
Graphics processing units (GPUs) provide a low cost platform for accelerating high performance computations. The introduction of new programming languages, such as CUDA and OpenCL, makes GPU programming attractive to a wide variety of programmers.

Suctioning Sponge

Archives of Ophthalmology, 1983
A newly devised sponge absorbs and suctions blood and irrigation fluids during surgical procedures. This new sponge eliminates the need for the frequent exchange of sponges during an operation. Although the sponge was designed for ophthalmic operations, it can be used in other types of surgical procedures as well.
