Remnant continuity forests are essential for sustaining epiphytic biodiversity in boreal production forest landscapes

open access: yesJournal of Applied Ecology, EarlyView.
Our study has relevance for forestry and conservation across the boreal biome where a continued rapid expansion of clearcutting into primary forest landscapes is likely. Preserving continuity forests for the future would enrich the epiphytic biodiversity of younger, even‐aged production forests due to their function as dispersal nuclei.

Above‐ground competition by Nephrolepis brownii inhibits tree seedling recruitment in a tropical restoration experiment

open access: yesJournal of Applied Ecology, EarlyView.
As Nephrolepis brownii primarily interferes through above‐ground competition, management of above‐ground tissues may mitigate its impact. However, additional research on the efficacy of this management strategy and potential allelopathic traits is needed.

Drivers of kelp forest refugia during successive disturbance events

open access: yesJournal of Ecology, EarlyView.
Cooler areas with localized upwelling acted as climate refugia during the increased ocean temperatures from the 2014–2016 marine heatwave, supporting nutrient‐rich environments and mitigating heat stress for kelp forests. However, these temperature refugia often did not spatially overlap with areas providing protection from grazing pressure, leaving ...

Abiotic conditions along altitude shape plant‐fungal associations by influencing both fungal availability and association strength

open access: yesJournal of Ecology, EarlyView.
In a large‐scale field survey in Fennoscandia, we investigated how the selected fungal communities within different Bistorta vivipara plant compartments varied with altitude, respective to the available fungal species pool in the soil and surrounding plants.

miR‐701 modulates the humoral immune response of Coptotermes formosanus against Metarhizium anisopliae

open access: yesInsect Science, EarlyView.
miR‐701 targets immune gene Toll4 to inhibit termite cellular immunity. miR‐701 overexpression increases termite mortality during fungal infection. miR‐701 suppresses termite cellular immune to fungi by inhibiting the Toll signaling pathway. Abstract Termites are not only social insects but also significant global insect pests.
