Sporotrichosis is caused by species of the fungus Sporothrix that affect human and several animal species. The transmission of sporotrichosis is classically from an environmental source following penetrating injury. The alternative zoonotic route has gained attention due to the rapid and significant spread of cat‐transmitted sporotrichosis in South ...

Sporothrix brasiliensis genetic toolbox
Sporotrichosis is the world's most prevalent and distributed subcutaneous mycosis. S. brasiliensis species is reported as the most virulent species, exhibiting the worst clinical manifestations, but the infection and virulence mechanisms of Sporothrix spp. still lack clarification.

Sporothrix and Sporotrichosis: A South African Perspective on a Growing Global Health Threat
ABSTRACT Sporotrichosis is a disease that arises from a fungal infection caused by members of the Ascomycete genus Sporothrix. The disease has a unique history in South Africa, due to an association with gold mines, where large numbers of mine workers were infected in the 1930s and 1940s.

Thermotolerance in S. cerevisiae as a model to study extracellular vesicle biology
Extracellular vesicles (EVs) are thought to mediate intercellular communication for diverse physiology in all organisms. However, EVs are understudied in S. cerevisiae (baker's yeast), a model organism extensively used to resolve the molecular basis of fundamental eukaryotic biology. Here, Logan et al.

The Sporothrix genus includes important human pathogens that cause sporotrichosis, neglected endemic mycoses with limited therapeutic options. In this study, we demonstrated that ibuprofen, an anti-inflammatory drug, increased the in vitro antifungal activity of itraconazole, the first choice treatment to human sporotrichosis.

Tacrolimus Increases the Effectiveness of Itraconazole and Fluconazole against Sporothrix spp.
Calcineurin inhibitors – such as the clinically used drug tacrolimus – are active against important fungal pathogens, particularly when combined with azoles.

The first autochthonous human case of sporotrichosis by Sporothrix brasiliensis in Paraguay [PDF]
Sporotrichosis by Sporothrix brasiliensis is increasingly reported in South America. Here, we present the first autochthonous human case in Paraguay, transmitted by a local infected cat. After 63 days of clinical signs onset, the patient was correctly diagnosed and antifungal treatment started, highlighting the need to increase awareness for this ...
