Experimental demonstration of coupled optical springs [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Optical rigidity will play an important role in improving the sensitivity of future generations of gravitational wave (GW) interferometers, which employ high laser power in order to reach and exceed the standard quantum limit.

A Labrador Spring

open access: yes, 1910
A doctor and a naturalist, Charles Townsend spent May-June 1909 travelling through Labrador. Although his primary interest was ornithology, his book devotes chapters to trees and rivers, as well as the Aboriginal Peoples and Acadian settlers he encountered. ; Includes bibliographical references and index.

The planar cell polarity protein Vangl2 interacts with the PDZ‐domains of Scribble but not with a unique PDZ‐like domain in Inturned

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Structural and biochemical characterisations show that the planar cell polarity (PCP) protein Inturned harbours a unique PDZ‐like domain that does not bind canonical PDZ‐binding motifs (PBMs) like that of another PCP protein Vangl2. In contrast, the apical‐basal polarity protein Scribble contains four PDZ domains that bind Vangl2, but one PDZ domain ...

Tau acetylation at K331 has limited impact on tau pathology in vivo

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We mapped tau post‐translational modifications in humanized MAPT knock‐in mice and in amyloid‐bearing double knock‐in mice. Acetylation within the repeat domain, particularly around K331, showed modest increases under amyloid pathology. To test functional relevance, we generated MAPTK331Q knock‐in mice.

Vibrational modes and spectrum of oscillators on a scale-free network

open access: yes, 2004
We study vibrational modes and spectrum of a model system of atoms and springs on a scale-free network in order to understand the nature of excitations with many degrees of freedom on the scale-free network.

Calpain small subunit homodimerization is robust and calcium‐independent

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Calpains dimerize via penta‐EF‐hand (PEF) domains. Using single‐molecule force spectroscopy, we measured the strength and kinetics of PEF–PEF homodimer binding. The interaction is robust, shows a transient conformational step before dissociation, and remains largely insensitive to Ca2+.

Radon and hydrogeochemical monitoring at Popocatépetl volcano, Mexico [PDF]

open access: yesGeofísica Internacional, 2002
Measurements of radon in soil gas were carried out around Popocatépetl volcano during the period from September 1997 to April 1999. Soil gas was sampled using a stainless steel probe, and measured in the field with an alpha scintillation counter.

Stick-Slip Motion and Phase Transition in a Block-Spring System

open access: yes, 2002
We study numerically stick slip motions in a model of blocks and springs being pulled slowly. The sliding friction is assumed to change dynamically with a state variable.

Structural insights into an engineered feruloyl esterase with improved MHET degrading properties

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
A feruloyl esterase was engineered to mimic key features of MHETase, enhancing the degradation of PET oligomers. Structural and computational analysis reveal how a point mutation stabilizes the active site and reshapes the binding cleft, expading substrate scope.
