Pharmacological inhibition of the PERK pathway modulates hepatocellular carcinoma growth and immune signaling

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Pharmacological inhibition of PERK in a DEN‐induced mouse model of liver cancer does not reduce tumor burden but alters cellular stress signaling. Despite blocking PERK activity, downstream stress responses, including CHOP expression, remain active, suggesting compensatory mechanisms within the unfolded protein response that may influence tumor ...

Why Not Call a Margin Squeeze a Margin Squeeze? [PDF]

open access: yesSSRN Electronic Journal, 2019
At the end of October 2018, Ofcom issued its first abuse of dominance infringement decision and fine under the Competition Act 1998 against Royal Mail. Perhaps surprisingly, Ofcom did not examine the behaviour as either a margin squeeze or a refusal to supply, the types of cases one would expect in post (and communications) services. Instead, it looked

Hyperactive ice‐binding proteins stabilize cell membranes and improve resistance to dehydration stress in Caenorhabditis elegans

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
TisIBP8, a fungal‐derived hyperactive ice‐binding protein, helps Caenorhabditis elegans survive dehydration. It localizes near cell membranes, reduces cell damage, and helps maintain membrane structure during drying. These results suggest that ice‐binding proteins can protect cells from dehydration stress as well as freezing stress.

An Analytical Model for Squeeze-Film Damping of Perforated Torsional Microplates Resonators

open access: yesSensors, 2015
Squeeze-film damping plays a significant role in the performance of micro-resonators because it determines their quality factors. Perforations in microstructures are often used to control the squeeze-film damping in micro-resonators.

Feasibility and Tolerability of Performing Portable MRI for Neurological Disorders in an Outpatient Neurology Clinic: A Prospective Cohort

open access: yesAnnals of Clinical and Translational Neurology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Background Accessing brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) can be challenging, especially for underserved patients, which may lead to disparities in neurological diagnosis. Method This mixed‐methods study enrolled adults with one of four neurological disorders: mild cognitive impairment or dementia of the Alzheimer type, multiple sclerosis ...

A Micro-Level Explanation for Suicidal Ideation Based on Marriage-Squeeze and Social Support Among Rural Men in China

open access: yesAmerican Journal of Men's Health, 2022
Higher sex ratio at birth often leads to sex imbalance and a severe squeeze on the marriage market. Up to now, no systematic studies have examined the relationship between marriage squeeze and suicidal ideation among rural men in a context of sex ...

Squeezing Phase Diffusion [PDF]

open access: yesPhysical Review Letters, 2020
We address the use of optical parametric oscillator (OPO) to counteract phase-noise in quantum optical communication channels, and demonstrate reduction of phase diffusion for coherent signals travelling through a suitably tuned OPO. In particular, we theoretically and experimentally show that there is a threshold value on the phase-noise, above which ...

Added Prognostic Value of EEG Reactivity in Comatose Patients Following Cardiac Arrest

open access: yesAnnals of Clinical and Translational Neurology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Objectives To evaluate the added prognostic value of EEG reactivity for favorable outcome compared with background analysis during and after targeted temperature management (TTM). Methods Prospective observational cohort study of comatose post–cardiac arrest patients admitted to a single academic center between 2017 and 2022, all undergoing ...

An Original Concept Solution of a Novel Elasto-Poro-Hydrodynamic Damper: Quasi-Static Analysis

open access: yesApplied Sciences
This work proposes a novel design configuration for an elasto-poro-hydrodynamic damper (EPHD damper) that consists of an imbibed, soft, elastic, porous material enclosed by a rubber membrane.

Approximate Analytical Model for the Squeeze-Film Lubrication of the Human Ankle Joint with Synovial Fluid Filtrated by Articular Cartilage

open access: yes, 2010
The aim of this article is to propose an analytical approximate squeeze-film lubrication model of the human ankle joint for a quick assessment of the synovial pressure field and the load carrying due to the squeeze motion.
