Monitoring Meat Freshness with Intelligent Colorimetric Labels Containing Red Cabbage Anthocyanins Copigmented with Gelatin and Gallic Acid

open access: yesFoods
Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)-based pH-responsive color indicators were developed using red cabbage anthocyanin (Anth) copigmented with gelatin and gallic acid (GA). The indicator prepared with gelatin and GA (GA/gelatin/Anth/PVA) was highly resistant to light

Overcoming the Trade‐Off Between Magnetic Coupling and Electrical Insulation in Soft Magnetic Materials via Nanochain Engineering

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
This study employs a nanochain engineering approach combined with an in situ oxidation strategy to fabricate self‐insulating iron‐based magnetic nanochains, addressing the challenge of balancing magnetic coupling and electrical insulation in soft magnetic materials.

New High‐Tc Charge‐Transfer Multiferroicity in the Quasi‐2D Antiferromagnet CrSbS3

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Low‐dimensional magnets, particularly 2D systems, offer a rich platform for realizing unconventional multiferroic mechanisms, especially when multiple polarization channels coexist. In the quasi‐2D antiferromagnet CrSbS3, which crystallizes in the centrosymmetric orthorhombic space group Pnma and orders magnetically at TN ≈ 90 K, two ...

Magnetoelectric Nanoparticle‐Based Wireless Brain–Computer Interface: Underlying Physics and Projected Technology Pathway

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Magnetoelectric nanoparticles (MENPs) enable fully wireless, minutely invasive neuromodulation, and potentially neural recording, by converting magnetic into electric and, conversely, electric into magnetic fields, respectively, at high spatiotemporal resolution.

Life-history traits of the giant squid Architeuthis dux revealed from stable isotope signatures recorded in beaks [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
We thank Yves Cherel and two anonymous referees for their comments and suggestions, which improved the paper substantially. The study was financed by an award (DE-FC09-96-SR18546) from the US Department of Energy to the University of Georgia Savannah ...

Stress‐to‐Light Conversion in an Earth‐Abundant Oxide Semiconductor

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Stress‐to‐light conversion in solids represents a unique photonic functionality, yet it has never been realized in a chemically simple and sustainable material. Here, we show that sustainable semiconductor ZnO exhibits strong near‐infrared (NIR) luminescence under elastic stress when defect‐engineered to stabilize the p‐type state.

Microbial reclamation of squid pen

open access: yes, 2012
Byproducts generated in great amounts by marine processes have been recognized for their value as recyclable or reclaimable waste. Squid have been investigated to extract β-chitin from squid pen (SP), produce peptides with angiotensin-I-converting enzyme

Outstanding TC Enhancement in 5d–3d Y2NiIrO6 by Compression

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Double perovskite Y2NiIrO6 with half filed 3d eg–5d t2g configuration, exhibits first experimental example of pressure‐enhanced magnetic interaction in iridate and iridate‐related systems. Its Curie temperature increase from 192 to 243 K at 17 GPa. Herein, the orthogonal eg–t2g pathway remains robust even under compression‐induced lattice distortion ...

Reductive Activation of White Phosphorus to [P4]2–, [P2]2–, and a Formal P2– Radical by Rare‐Earth Dinitrogen Complexes

open access: yesAngewandte Chemie, EarlyView.
Masked divalent yttrium and gadolinium dinitrogen complexes mediate the fragmentation of white phosphorus, converting P4 into discrete dimetallic complexes of [P4]2– and [P2]2– ligands, and an unprecedented monatomic P2– radical ligand. Structural, spectroscopic, magnetic, and DFT studies reveal insight into the bonding between these unusual Pn units ...
