DC‐magnetometry Analytical Tool Driven by Spin Ordering Phenomena for Sensing Chemical Interactions at the Surface of Nanomaterials

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
The adsorption of AsV on akaganeite nanorods was found to provide a magnetic signature. A change in the surface spin order gave rise to a second peak in the zero‐field cooled curve. AsIII adsorption does not provide any change in the magnetic behavior of the sorbent.

Magnetoelectric Nanoparticle‐Based Wireless Brain–Computer Interface: Underlying Physics and Projected Technology Pathway

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Magnetoelectric nanoparticles (MENPs) enable fully wireless, minutely invasive neuromodulation, and potentially neural recording, by converting magnetic into electric and, conversely, electric into magnetic fields, respectively, at high spatiotemporal resolution.

Stress‐to‐Light Conversion in an Earth‐Abundant Oxide Semiconductor

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Stress‐to‐light conversion in solids represents a unique photonic functionality, yet it has never been realized in a chemically simple and sustainable material. Here, we show that sustainable semiconductor ZnO exhibits strong near‐infrared (NIR) luminescence under elastic stress when defect‐engineered to stabilize the p‐type state.

Effects of Heating Treatment on the Physicochemical and Volatile Flavor Properties of Argentinian Shortfin Squid (Illex argentinus)

open access: yesFoods
In this study, the effect of different heating temperatures (80, 90, 100, and 121 °C) on the physicochemical and volatile flavor properties of fried mantles (Argentinian shortfin) was investigated.

Aspects of female reproductive biology of the orange-back squid, Sthenoteuthis pteropus (Steenstup) (Oegopsina: Ommastrephidae) in the eastern tropical Atlantic

open access: yesScientia Marina, 2005
Orange-back squid females, Sthenoteuthis pteropus, were found to mature at two different sizes: 230-270 mm and 380-450 mm mantle length (ML). The systematic status of these groups remains unknown.

Ethical and Frugal Approaches to Animal Experimentation in Bioelectronics and Neural Engineering—An Invertebrate Renaissance?

open access: yesAdvanced Electronic Materials, EarlyView.
Invertebrates are the classic neuroscience models and should make a comeback. Invertebrate organisms can be a more ethical and cost‐effective way to move bioelectronics research forward more rapidly. ABSTRACT The accelerating development of bioelectronic neural interfaces has brought increased attention to ethical considerations surrounding in vivo ...

Using Citizen Science to Improve Our Understanding of Northern Shortfin Squid (Illex illecebrosus) and Longfin Inshore Squid (Doryteuthis pealeii) Ecology and Fisheries off Atlantic Canada

open access: yesFishes
Northern shortfin squid (Illex illecebrosus) and longfin inshore squid (Doryteuthis pealeii) are fished commercially and recreationally off Atlantic Canada, but limited reporting, particularly from recreational fisheries, has left major gaps in our ...

Development of the hectocotylus in Illex coindetii (Verany 1837) (Cephalopoda: Ommastrephidae)

open access: yesScientia Marina, 2012
Species of the genus Illex (Family Ommastrephidae) are distinguished morphologically mainly based on differences in the hectocotylus, the modified arm that males of many cephalopod species use to transfer spermatophores to females during mating We ...

Emergent Spin Fluctuation and Structural Metastability in Self‐Intercalated Cr1+xTe2${\rm Cr}_{1+x}{\rm Te}_2$ Compounds

open access: yesAdvanced Electronic Materials, EarlyView.
Metastable superstructure and emergent spin fluctuation in self‐intercalated Cr1+xTe2${\rm Cr}_{1+x}{\rm Te}_2$ ABSTRACT Intercalated van der Waals (vdW) magnetic materials host unique magnetic properties due to the interplay of competing interlayer and intralayer exchange couplings, which depend on the intercalant concentration within the van der ...

Spatial and temporal patterns in size and maturation of Loligo plei and Loligo sanpaulensis (Cephalopoda: Loliginidae) in southeastern Brazilian waters, between 23°S and 27°S

open access: yesScientia Marina, 2008
Patterns of population dynamics of Loligo plei and Loligo sanpaulensis in southeastern Brazil were investigated with samples obtained from commercial catches and research cruises from 1999 to 2000 and from 2002 to 2003. Size and maturity structure of the
