A Multidisciplinary Approach for the Characterization of Artificial Cavities of Historical and Cultural Interest: The Case Study of the Cloister of Sant’Agostino—Caserta, Italy

open access: yesGeosciences
In northern Campania (Southern Italy), the historic center of many towns is characterized by the widespread presence of cavities in the subsoil, excavated over the centuries for quarrying tuff blocks for buildings, along with cathedrals, churches and ...

Stability and aggregation of ranked gene lists [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
Ranked gene lists are highly instable in the sense that similar measures of differential gene expression may yield very different rankings, and that a small change of the data set usually affects the obtained gene list considerably.

The newfound relationship between extrachromosomal DNAs and excised signal circles

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Extrachromosomal DNAs (ecDNAs) contribute to the progression of many human cancers. In addition, circular DNA by‐products of V(D)J recombination, excised signal circles (ESCs), have roles in cancer progression but have largely been overlooked. In this Review, we explore the roles of ecDNAs and ESCs in cancer development, and highlight why these ...

Online Voltage Stability Assessment for Load Areas Based on the Holomorphic Embedding Method [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
This paper proposes an online steady-state voltage stability assessment scheme to evaluate the proximity to voltage collapse at each bus of a load area.

An upstream open reading frame regulates expression of the mitochondrial protein Slm35 and mitophagy flux

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This study reveals how the mitochondrial protein Slm35 is regulated in Saccharomyces cerevisiae. The authors identify stress‐responsive DNA elements and two upstream open reading frames (uORFs) in the 5′ untranslated region of SLM35. One uORF restricts translation, and its mutation increases Slm35 protein levels and mitophagy.

A quantitative methodology for evaluating the ship stability using the index for marine ship intact stability assessment model

open access: yesInternational Journal of Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering, 2021
IMO stability regulations include various stability parameters such as GM values. To assess the stability of the ships, we should check all stability parameters of the IMO requirements.

Structural instability impairs function of the UDP‐xylose synthase 1 Ile181Asn variant associated with short‐stature genetic syndrome in humans

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The Ile181Asn variant of human UDP‐xylose synthase (hUXS1), associated with a short‐stature genetic syndrome, has previously been reported as inactive. Our findings demonstrate that Ile181Asn‐hUXS1 retains catalytic activity similar to the wild‐type but exhibits reduced stability, a looser oligomeric state, and an increased tendency to precipitate ...

Impedance-compensated grid synchronisation for extending the stability range of weak grids with voltage source converters [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
This paper demonstrates how the range of stable power transfer in weak grids with voltage source converters (VSCs) can be extended by modifying the grid synchronisation mechanism of a conventional synchronous reference frame phase locked loop (PLL).

PICALM::MLLT10 translocated leukemia

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This comprehensive review of PICALM::MLLT10 translocated acute leukemia provides an in‐depth review of the structure and function of CALM, AF10, and the fusion oncoprotein (1). The multifaceted molecular mechanisms of oncogenesis, including nucleocytoplasmic shuttling (2), epigenetic modifications (3), and disruption of endocytosis (4), are then ...

Energy-Based Reinterpretation of Equal Area Criterion for Generator Instability Assessment via Local Rotational Speed and Voltage Frequency Measurements

open access: yesIEEE Access
To apply the physical concept of stability embedded in the equal area criterion (EAC) to large-scale power systems, this study proposes a measurement-based reinterpretation of the EAC from an energy perspective in the time domain. Based on this approach,
