Raman‐based label‐free microscopic analysis of the pancreas in living zebrafish larvae

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Forward stimulated Raman scattering (F‐SRS) and epi coherent anti‐Stokes Raman scattering (E‐CARS) allow label‐free discrimination of distinct subcellular structures in the pancreas of living zebrafish larvae. Given the straightforward applicability, we anticipate broad implementation of Raman microscopy in other organs and across various biomedical ...

Memory and Energy Optimization Strategies for Multithreaded Operating System on the Resource-Constrained Wireless Sensor Node

open access: yesSensors, 2014
Memory and energy optimization strategies are essential for the resource-constrained wireless sensor network (WSN) nodes. In this article, a new memory-optimized and energy-optimized multithreaded WSN operating system (OS) LiveOS is designed and ...

Ellen (Ella) Stack

open access: yes, 1941
Date:1941Ella Stack and her family moved to Darwin in 1961. She was first employed for a few weeks mid-1961 by a local GP and then in 1962, Ella took over as long-term locum. She was one of two private practitioners in Darwin. Cyclone Tracy hit Darwin in

Evolutionarily divergent DUF4465 domains have a common vitamin B12‐binding function

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
We show that DUF4465 family proteins, widespread across bacteria from gut microbiomes, hydrothermal vents, and soil, share a common vitamin B12‐binding function. These augmented β‐jellyroll proteins bind vitamin B12 via extended loops. Our findings establish sequence‐diverse DUF4465 proteins as a widespread class of B12‐binding proteins, highlighting ...

Large‐scale bidirectional arrayed genetic screens identify OXR1 and EMC4 as modifiers of αSynuclein aggregation

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Activation of the mitochondrial protein OXR1 increases pSyn129 αSynuclein aggregation by lowering ATP levels and altering mitochondrial membrane potential, particularly in response to MSA‐derived fibrils. In contrast, ablation of the ER protein EMC4 enhances autophagic flux and lysosomal clearance, broadly reducing α‐synuclein aggregates.

Efficient Low-Memory Fast Stack Decoding With Variance Polarization for PAC Codes

open access: yesIEEE Open Journal of the Communications Society
Polarization-adjusted convolutional (PAC) codes have recently emerged as a promising class of error-correcting codes, achieving near-capacity performance particularly in the short block-length regime.

When gait isn't straight forward: how do you assess the ability to turn?

open access: yes, 2004
For people with Parkinson’s Disease (PD), difficulty turning is a notorious cause of freezing and falls (Bloem et al, 2001; Stack and Ashburn, 1999; Nieuwboer et al, 1998; Yekutiel, 1993; Giladi et al, 1992) and may lead to a physiotherapy referral. What

Stack Number, Track Number, and Layered Pathwidth

open access: yes, 2020
In this thesis, we consider three parameters associated with graphs : stack number, track number, and layered pathwidth. Our first result is to show that the stack number of any graph is at most 4 times its layered pathwidth.

The skills required for transition to university and study in biological sciences: A student perspective

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Bioscience students were asked for their opinions on the value and teaching of skills. 204 responded that teamwork, time management and study skills are necessary to reach University, that scientific writing, research, laboratory and presentation skills are taught effectively during their studies, while other skills are gained inherently through study ...

Permutations sortable by n-4 passes through a stack

open access: yes, 2010
The subject of pattern avoiding permutations has its roots in computer science, namely in the problem of sorting a permutation through a stack. A formula for the number of permutations of length n that can be sorted by passing it twice through a stack ...
