Structural studies and functional engineering of NanX: an anhydro‐sialic acid transporter from Escherichia coli

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Biophysical characterisation shows that NanX, a membrane transport protein from the major facilitator superfamily (MFS), forms both monomers and dimers after purification. AlphaFold modelling and substrate docking provide information on residues likely involved in substrate recognition for NanX and another MFS member, NanT.

In silico and in vitro exploration of a tyrosinase for biocatalytic production of catechols

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Tyrosinase from Ralstonia pseudosolanacearum is a promising biocatalyst for producing valuable catechols from monophenol substrates. This tyrosinase is uniquely suited to this due to its high monophenolase : diphenolase ratio. We combined in silico docking and in vivo kinetic characterisation of this tyrosinase with 11 industrially relevant monophenols,

Sorting Multibay Block Stacking Storage Systems

open access: yesComputers & Operations Research
Autonomous mobile robots (AMRs) are increasingly deployed in intralogistics to automate warehouse operations. A key advantage of AMRs is their continuous availability, enabling them to operate during off-peak hours. This work addresses the multi-bay unit-load pre-marshalling problem (MUPMP), an extension of the unit-load pre-marshalling problem to ...

Adenosine triphosphate as a modulator of protein interactions and stability

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
ATP is best known as the cell's energy currency, but it also shapes how proteins fold, interact, aggregate and form biomolecular condensates. This review explains the emerging physical principles behind these effects, including weak binding to charged protein regions, magnesium‐dependent behaviour and concentration‐dependent control of protein ...

When gait isn't straight forward: how do you assess the ability to turn?

open access: yes, 2004
For people with Parkinson’s Disease (PD), difficulty turning is a notorious cause of freezing and falls (Bloem et al, 2001; Stack and Ashburn, 1999; Nieuwboer et al, 1998; Yekutiel, 1993; Giladi et al, 1992) and may lead to a physiotherapy referral. What

Stack, Leo. Joelle Carey interviews Leo Stack June 14, 2012

open access: yes, 2012
Interview by Joelle Carey with Leo Stack of Petty Harbour Maddox Cove about make and break engines on June 14, 2012. Stack defines make and break engine; talks about what makes them different; talks about why they were popular in NL; repairing make and ...

Heterotropic regulation and negative homotropic cooperativity

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
We identified a structural module common to some proteins that couple negative cooperativity with heterotropic regulation, two features that rarely coexist. These proteins are ring‐like and present an ordered asymmetry whereby noncontacting subunits are symmetric, and their tertiary structure differs from that of contacting subunits.

A lift of West’s stack-sorting map to partition diagrams

open access: yesPacific Journal of Mathematics, 2023
We introduce a lifting of West's stack-sorting map $s$ to partition diagrams, which are combinatorial objects indexing bases of partition algebras. Our lifting $\mathscr{S}$ of $s$ is such that $\mathscr{S}$ behaves in the same way as $s$ when restricted to diagram basis elements in the order-$n$ symmetric group algebra as a diagram subalgebra of the ...

Identification and characterisation of calcitonin receptor isoforms expressed in glioblastoma derived glioma stem and U‐87 MG cells

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Glioblastoma cells express calcitonin receptor variants (CT receptor isoforms) that may help them survive stress. Using qPCR, transcript‐specific long‐read nanopore sequencing, immunofluorescence co‐localisation and comparative sequence analysis, this study identifies a novel alternatively spliced CALCR transcript that encodes the CTb receptor isoform ...

Integrating Time‐Adjusted Imaging Instability Into Functional Outcome Prediction After Intracerebral Hemorrhage: Development and Validation of the HAGIV Score

open access: yesAnnals of Clinical and Translational Neurology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Objective Early risk stratification may support clinical decision‐making in spontaneous intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH). We aimed to develop and internally validate HAGIV, a score integrating frequency of imaging markers (FIM), a time‐adjusted non‐contrast computed tomography (CT) metric of hematoma expansion, with established predictors for 90‐
