In a call center, staffing decisions must be made before the call arrival rate is known with certainty. Then, once the arrival rate becomes known, the call center may be over-staffed, in which case staff are being paid to be idle, or under-staffed, in which case many callers hang-up in the face of long wait times.

Feasibility study of skin dosimetry with TLD sheets for measuring the effect of 3D printed bolus in radiotherapy

Abstract The thermoluminescence dosimeter (TLD) sheet is a measurement device coated with manganese‐doped LiB3O5 in sheet form. The sheet is 0.2‐mm thick and flexible. Hence, it can fit and be installed on irregular surfaces. The current study aimed to evaluate the feasibility of measuring patient surface doses during radiation therapy using TLD sheets.

Nurse Staffing under Absenteeism: A Distributionally Robust Optimization Approach [PDF]

We study the nurse staffing problem under random nurse demand and absenteeism. While the demand uncertainty is exogenous (stemming from the random patient census), the absenteeism uncertainty is \emph{endogenous}, i.e., the number of nurses who show up for work partially depends on the nurse staffing level.
