Managers, modelers, and measuring the impact of species distribution model uncertainty on marine zoning decisions. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2018
Marine managers routinely use spatial data to make decisions about their marine environment. Uncertainty associated with this spatial data can have profound impacts on these management decisions and their projected outcomes.

Historical Biogeography of Spiny Lobsters in the Genus Panulirus (Achelata: Palinuridae)

open access: yesJournal of Biogeography, Volume 52, Issue 11, November 2025.
ABSTRACT Aim Panulirus is the spiny lobster genus with the most living species, containing 22 recognised species split into two lineages distinguished by habitat preference. Diversification has been proposed to occur due to geographic events affecting the distribution of adults and the dispersal potential of long‐lived larvae by oceanic currents ...

In hospite and ex hospite architecture of photosynthetic thylakoid membranes in Symbiodinium spp. using small‐angle neutron scattering

open access: yesJournal of Applied Crystallography, Volume 58, Issue 5, Page 1516-1525, October 2025.
Small‐angle neutron scattering is used to detect signals from the photosynthetic membranes of symbiotic algae living inside and outside their host corals and anemones. A model is constructed for the scattering that allows the architecture of the triple membrane stack be understood in living organisms, with implications for their physiology. We ...

Trophic Structure and the Isotopic Niche Dynamics of the Tasiujaq (Eclipse Sound, Nunavut, Canada) Marine Food Web

open access: yesAquatic Conservation: Marine and Freshwater Ecosystems, Volume 35, Issue 9, September 2025.
ABSTRACT Rapid warming in the Arctic is causing cumulative impacts on ecosystems, including widespread reduction in sea ice extent, resulting in shifts in primary production, which can have cascading bottom‐up trophic influences on marine food web structure and function. Understanding trophic interactions and the structure of local food webs across the

CREARE: A Course-Based Undergraduate Research Experience to Study the Responses of the Endangered Coral Acropora cervicornis to a Changing Environment

open access: yesJournal of Microbiology & Biology Education, 2021
There is mounting evidence to support that students who participate in scientific research experiences are more likely to continue on to advanced degrees and careers in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM).

Symbiodiniaceae and Bacterial Microbiome Dynamics Differentially Impact the Survival of Dominant Reef‐Flat Porites Corals

open access: yesEnvironmental Microbiology, Volume 27, Issue 9, September 2025.
DNA metabarcoding revealed significant shifts in the dominant Symbiodiniaceae and bacteria of Porites spp. undergoing transplantation. Porites lobata colonies that experienced shifts in their microbial communities had higher coral colony partial mortality 18 weeks after transplantation.

Incorporating herbivorous sea urchins in ramet culture of staghorn coral Acropora cervicornis

open access: yesEndangered Species Research, 2013
Since the 2006 listing of the staghorn coral Acropora cervicornis as threatened under the US Endangered Species Act, interest has increased in its culture for laboratory studies, restoration and ex situ conservation efforts.

The skeleton of the staghorn coral Acropora millepora: molecular and structural characterization. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2014
The scleractinian coral Acropora millepora is one of the most studied species from the Great Barrier Reef. This species has been used to understand evolutionary, immune and developmental processes in cnidarians.

RapidBenthos: Automated segmentation and multi‐view classification of coral reef communities from photogrammetric reconstruction

open access: yesMethods in Ecology and Evolution, Volume 16, Issue 2, Page 427-441, February 2025.
Abstract Underwater photogrammetry is routinely used to monitor large areas of complex and heterogeneous ecosystems, such as coral reefs. However, deriving data on benthic components (i.e. sand, rubble, coral and algae) from photogrammetry products has remained challenging due to the highly time‐consuming process of manual data extraction. We developed

The Loss of Beneficial Thermal Priming on Global Coral Reefs

open access: yesGlobal Change Biology, Volume 30, Issue 12, December 2024.
Periods of unusually warm ocean temperatures, known as marine heatwaves, have increased due to climate change, which can cause the bleaching and death of tropical corals. One way in which corals can be protected is through “priming,” exposure to sublethal heat stress before a heatwave.
