Light Limitation of Poleward Coral Reef Expansion During Past Warm Climates

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, Volume 51, Issue 22, 28 November 2024.
Abstract The latitudinal range of modern shallow‐water tropical corals is controlled by temperature, and presently limited to waters warmer than 16–18°C year‐round. However, even during Cenozoic climates with such temperatures in polar regions, coral reefs are not found beyond >50° latitude.

Coral reef rehabilitation through transplantation of staghorn corals: effects of artificial stabilization and mechanical damages

open access: yes, 2003
In order to develop and test a low-cost method of coral reef rehabilitation, the staghorn corals Acropora muricata and A. vaughani were transplanted to a shallow site with unstable substrate.

Guests in nests: A parallel between social plants and animals?

open access: yesBiotropica, Volume 56, Issue 5, September 2024.
This study explores the relationship observed between ‘guests’—foreign inhabitants of social colonies—and the density and fecundity of eusocial‐like staghorn ferns (Platycerium bifurcatum, Polypodiaceae). Our observations suggest that guests in staghorn colonies have a range of commensal and negative relationships, paralleling those seen in eusocial ...

Out of shape: Ocean acidification simplifies coral reef architecture and reshuffles fish assemblages

open access: yesJournal of Animal Ecology, Volume 93, Issue 8, Page 1097-1107, August 2024.
Many small‐bodied reef fish are strongly associated with structurally complex corals. However, under acidified conditions, massive corals often outcompete branching corals, leading to reef ‘flattening’. As ocean acidification increases globally, we show that resultant simplification of coral structural complexity may act as an important mediator of ...

Staghorn coral health following experimental treatment with and without antibiotics

open access: yes, 2021
Dataset: Coral priorityThis dataset reports results from a priority experiment with staghorn corals fragments from 10 genotypes. Antibiotic-treated and untreated tanks were sampled for DNA and exposed to disease or healthy slurries at two time points ...

Coral reefs in transition: Temporal photoquadrat analyses and validation of underwater hyperspectral imaging for resource-efficient monitoring in Guam.

open access: yesPLoS ONE
The island of Guam in the west Pacific has seen a significant decrease in coral cover since 2013. Lafac Bay, a marine protected area in northeast Guam, served as a reference site for benthic communities typical of forereefs on the windward side of the ...
