Marine microbial fuel cell : use of stainless steel electrodes as anode and cathode materials [PDF]

open access: yes, 2007
Numerous biocorrosion studies have stated that biofilms formed in aerobic seawater induce an efficient catalysis of the oxygen reduction on stainless steels. This property was implemented here for the first time in a marine microbial fuel cell (MFC).

Miniature Nanomesh Mechano‐Acoustic Sensor with Wide Linear Dynamic Range, Broad Bandwidth, and Flat Frequency Response

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
A miniaturized mechano‐acoustic sensor is developed using an electrospun PVDF nanomesh as the diaphragm in a capacitive sensor structure. Unlike conventional nanomesh‐based sensors, it achieves high linear sensitivity, a broad and flat frequency response, and a compact form factor.

Microstructure evolution and corrosion behavior of laser metal deposited 316L stainless steel bipolar plates subjected to tensile deformation

open access: yesJournal of Materials Research and Technology
The impact of tensile deformation on the microstructural characteristics and corrosion resistance of 316L austenitic stainless steel (ASS) produced via laser metal deposition (LMD) was systematically studied using electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD ...

Functional Materials for Environmental Energy Harvesting in Smart Agriculture via Triboelectric Nanogenerators

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
This review explores functional and responsive materials for triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) in sustainable smart agriculture. It examines how particulate contamination and dirt affect charge transfer and efficiency. Environmental challenges and strategies to enhance durability and responsiveness are outlined, including active functional layers ...

Saturation in “nonmagnetic” stainless steel [PDF]

open access: yes, 1998
Scientific equipment often uses “nonmagnetic” stainless steel, relying on the steel’s nonmagnetic behavior to leave external magnetic fields unaltered. However, stainless steel’s permeability can rise significantly when it is welded or machined, possibly

Rapid Sintering of Porous Organic Polymer Powders Into Mechanically Strong Monoliths for Efficient CO2 Capture

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Spark plasma sintering enables rapid processing of porous organic polymer (POP) from fine powders to a freestanding and mechanically robust monolith. The sintering process retains the CO2 adsorption capacity and CO2/N2 selectivity, making the monolith more suitable as a solid sorbent for practical carbon capture applications.

Quantifying Spatio‐Operational Heterogeneity in Electrochemical Devices via Operando Correlative Neutron and X‐Ray Tomography

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Heterogeniety in electrochemical systems heavily influences device performance and durability. The study shows unique evidence of spatio‐operational heterogeneity in fuel cells via operando neutron and X‐ray tomography. Large variations in membrane thickness and hydration depend upon location and operating conditions, with implications on membrane ...
