The perimeter generating function of punctured staircase polygons [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Physics A, 2006
Using a simple transfer matrix approach we have derived very long series expansions for the perimeter generating function of punctured staircase polygons (staircase polygons with a single internal staircase hole). We find that all the terms in the generating function can be reproduced from a linear Fuchsian differential equation of order 8.

Enumeration of Permutation Classes and Weighted Labelled Independent Sets [PDF]

open access: yesDiscrete Mathematics & Theoretical Computer Science, 2021
In this paper, we study the staircase encoding of permutations, which maps a permutation to a staircase grid with cells filled with permutations. We consider many cases, where restricted to a permutation class, the staircase encoding becomes a bijection ...

Conceptual Design and Analysis of a Hybrid Walking Cane

open access: yesJournal of Engineering Technology and Applied Physics, 2021
This work is aimedto design and analyze thestaircase climbing aid, hybrid with the function of walking cane. The tremendous demand for living space increasesthe essentiality of staircase, corresponding to the escalation of fall ...

Finite approximation of zero-sum games played in staircase-function continuous spaces

open access: yesKPI Science News, 2022
Background. There is a known method of approximating continuous zero-sum games, wherein an approximate solutionis considered acceptable if it changes minimally by changing the sampling step minimally.

Chip-Firing And A Devil's Staircase [PDF]

open access: yesDiscrete Mathematics & Theoretical Computer Science, 2009
The devil's staircase ― a continuous function on the unit interval $[0,1]$ which is not constant, yet is locally constant on an open dense set ― is the sort of exotic creature a combinatorialist might never expect to encounter in "real life.'' We show ...

Optimization with exit functions of GLDPC-Staircase codes for the BEC [PDF]

open access: yes2012 IEEE 13th International Workshop on Signal Processing Advances in Wireless Communications (SPAWC), 2012
In a previous work we introduced the Generalized LDPC- Staircase codes for the Binary Erasure Channel, based on LDPC-Staircase codes and Reed Solomon as component codes. In this paper we perform an asymptotic analysis, in terms of EXtrinsic Information Transfer functions and we de- rive an upper bound of the ML decoding threshold based on the area ...

Staircase skew Schur functions are Schur P-positive [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Algebraic Combinatorics, 2012
We prove Stanley's conjecture that, if delta_n is the staircase shape, then the skew Schur functions s_{delta_n / mu} are non-negative sums of Schur P-functions. We prove that the coefficients in this sum count certain fillings of shifted shapes. In particular, for the skew Schur function s_{delta_n / delta_{n-2}}, we discuss connections with Eulerian ...

Random variables with moment-matching staircase density functions [PDF]

open access: yesApplied Mathematical Modelling, 2018
This paper proposes a family of random variables for uncertainty modeling. The variables of interest have a bounded support set, and prescribed values for the first four moments. We present the feasibility conditions for the existence of any of such variables, and propose a class of variables that conforms to such constraints.

Tableaux and plane partitions of truncated shapes (extended abstract) [PDF]

open access: yesDiscrete Mathematics & Theoretical Computer Science, 2011
We consider a new kind of straight and shifted plane partitions/Young tableaux — ones whose diagrams are no longer of partition shape, but rather Young diagrams with boxes erased from their upper right ends.
