An Enhanced High-Order Variational Model Based on Speckle Noise Removal With $G^0$ Distribution

open access: yesIEEE Access, 2019
Speckle noise removal problem has been researched under the framework of regularization-based approaches. The regularizer is normally defined as total variation (TV) that induces staircase effect.

Asymptotics of Schur functions on almost staircase partitions

open access: yesElectronic Communications in Probability, 2020
We study the asymptotics of Schur polynomials with partitions $λ$ which are almost staircase; more precisely, partitions that differ from $((m-1)(N-1),(m-1)(N-2),\ldots,(m-1),0)$ by at most one component at the beginning as $N\rightarrow \infty$, for a positive integer $m\ge 1$ independent of $N$.

A Workflow to Accelerate Microstructure‐Sensitive Fatigue Life Predictions

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This study introduces a workflow to accelerate predictions of microstructure‐sensitive fatigue life. Results from frameworks with varying levels of simplification are benchmarked against published reference results. The analysis reveals a trade‐off between accuracy and model complexity, offering researchers a practical guide for selecting the optimal ...

Color Transfer Using Adaptive Second-Order Total Generalized Variation Regularizer

open access: yesIEEE Access, 2018
Color transfer is to generate synthetic images by changing the color of target images with new colors obtained from given source images, while the geometrical structure of the synthetic images remains the same. Classical color transfer models use a total

Spatial Unmasking Effect on Speech Reception Threshold in the Median Plane

open access: yesApplied Sciences, 2020
This study examined whether the spatial unmasking effect operates on speech reception thresholds (SRTs) in the median plane. SRTs were measured using an adaptive staircase procedure, with target speech sentences and speech-shaped noise maskers presented ...

A protocol for tactile function assessment using JVP domes: Feasibility study and preliminary results

open access: yesBrain and Behavior, 2023
Background Touch is a crucial sense for perceiving the spatial characteristics of objects. The JVP dome was developed to evaluate tactile spatial acuity using a grating orientation task.

Is an Apple an Orange? A Large Language Model Benchmark for Candidate Term Extraction and Subclass Decisions Against Upper Ontologies in Engineering and Materials Science

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Building machine‐readable vocabularies for materials science is slow, expert‐driven work. This study benchmarks 13 large language models on two of its first steps: finding candidate terms in engineering articles and deciding where they belong in a class hierarchy.

Neural Network Verification as Piecewise Linear Optimization: Formulations for the Composition of Staircase Functions

open access: yesCoRR, 2022
We present a technique for neural network verification using mixed-integer programming (MIP) formulations. We derive a \emph{strong formulation} for each neuron in a network using piecewise linear activation functions. Additionally, as in general, these formulations may require an exponential number of inequalities, we also derive a separation ...

Slip Localization Intensification Mediated by Grain Boundary Sliding in a Polycrystalline Nickel‐Based Superalloy

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
The temperature dependence of fatigue behavior in nickel‐based superalloys is investigated through high‐resolution measurements of plastic localization. While increasing temperature reduces localization and enhances fatigue performance in René 88DT, Inconel 718 exhibits a sharp degradation at intermediate temperature due to intensified slip ...
