Systemic dysregulation of apolipoproteins in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis serum

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a fatal disease that damages motor neurons. This study found that people with ALS show significant changes in blood fats and the proteins that carry them. Several apolipoproteins were higher, lipid balances were altered, and normal protein–lipid relationships were disrupted.

Design and uncertainty analysis for a PVTt gas flow standard

open access: yesJournal of Research of the National Institute of Standards and Technology, 2003
A new pressure, volume, temperature, and, time (PVTt) primary gas flow standard at the National Institute of Standards and Technology has an expanded uncertainty (k = 2) of between 0.02 % and 0.05 %. The standard spans the flow range of 1 L/min to 2000 L/min using two collection tanks and two diverter valve systems.

The skills required for transition to university and study in biological sciences: A student perspective

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Bioscience students were asked for their opinions on the value and teaching of skills. 204 responded that teamwork, time management and study skills are necessary to reach University, that scientific writing, research, laboratory and presentation skills are taught effectively during their studies, while other skills are gained inherently through study ...

Inflação e incerteza inflacionária no Brasil

open access: yesEconomia Aplicada, 2016
This paper studies the relationship between the level of inflation and inflation uncertainty in Brazil. This variable is obtained through two different methods. In the first one, inflation uncertainty is estimated with GARCH models.

Uncertainty and the Standard for Preliminary Relief

open access: yesSSRN Electronic Journal, 2002
In deciding whether to issue a preliminary injunction, courts today focus on three factors: the likelihood that plaintiff will ultimately prevail on the merits; the harm defendant will suffer if the injunction is wrongly issued; and the harm plaintiff will suffer if the injunction is wrongly denied.

The measurement and uncertainty of a calibration standard for the scanning electron microscope

open access: yesJournal of Research of the National Institute of Standards and Technology, 1994
Standard Reference Material 484 is an artifact for calibrating the magnification scale of a Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) within the range of 1000 × to 20000 ×. Seven issues, SRM-484, and SRM-484a to SRM-484f, have been certified between 1977 and 1992.

Does inflation uncertainty increase with inflation? [PDF]

open access: yes
One of the most important costs of inflation is the uncertainty it creates about future inflation. This uncertainty clouds the decisionmaking of consumers and businesses and reduces economic well-being.

YIPFα1A expression is regulated by multilayered molecular mechanisms

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
YIPFα1A, a five‐pass Golgi protein, is regulated at multiple layers. (1) Rare‐codon enrichment drives translation‐coupled mRNA decay. (2) A proximal 3′‐UTR element stabilizes mRNA. (3) A distal 3′‐UTR element included by alternate poly(A) site usage represses translation, which can be overridden by the proximal 3′‐UTR element.

Measuring the NAIRU with Reduced Uncertainty: A Multiple Indicator-Common Component Approach [PDF]

open access: yes
Standard estimates of the NAIRU or natural rate of unemployment are subject to considerable uncertainty. We show in this paper that using multiple indicators to extract an estimated NAIRU cuts in half uncertainty as measured by variance. The inclusion of
