Starch Accumulation in Duckweed for Bioethanol Production

Biological Engineering, 2011
In an effort to explore novel starch sources for fuel ethanol production, Spirodela polyrrhiza, a local duckweed strain in North Carolina, was studied at different growing conditions including temperature, nutrient level, and daily light integral (DLI) for starch accumulation.

Accumulation of starch in Chlamydomonas reinhardtii flagellar mutants

Biochemistry and Cell Biology, 1992
Paralyzed flagellar mutants pf-1, pf-2, pf-7, and pf-18 of the green alga Chlamydomonas reinhardtii (Dangeard) were shown to store a significantly greater amount of starch than the motile wild type 137c+. The increase in starch storage was significant relative to protein, chlorophyll, and cell number.

Gravimetric enrichment of high lipid and starch accumulating microalgae

Bioresource Technology, 2015
This study presents gravimetric enrichment of mixed culture to screen starch and lipid producing species separately in a sequencing batch reactor. In the enriched starch-producing mixed culture photobioreactor, the starch content at the end of steady state batch became 3.42 times the beginning of depletion.

Identification of maize seedling mutants lacking starch accumulation capacity

Biochemical Genetics, 1971
A quick iodine staining test was utilized to screen leaves for the capacity to accumulate starch from exogenously supplied glucose. Five maize mutants which had reduced capacities for starch accumulation were isolated from chlorophyll-deficient stocks. Quantitative starch determinations confirmed the visual test results. The mutants, l 4, l7, l3, l4920,

Organelle DNA contents and starch accumulation in potato tubers

Theoretical and Applied Genetics, 2018
Starch contents were found to be positively correlated with organelle/nuclear DNA ratios, suggesting that these ratios are involved in starch accumulation and may serve as a target trait in genetic engineering and a biomarker in breeding for improving the dry matter and starch production in potato.

Trehalose accumulation from soluble starch by Saccharomycopsis fibuligera sdu

Enzyme and Microbial Technology, 2001
Trehalose accumulation from starch by Saccharomycopsis fibuligera sdu was examined in 300-ml shaken flask culture and Biostat B(2) 2-1 fermentation. In the 300-ml flask, 16.5% (w/w) trehalose accumulated in the yeast cells (cell dry weight) was observed with 100-ml medium shaken at 200 rpm for 50 h at 30 degrees C.

miR156 regulates somatic embryogenesis by modulating starch accumulation in citrus

Journal of Experimental Botany, 2022
Abstract Somatic embryogenesis (SE) is a major regeneration approach for in vitro cultured tissues of plants, including citrus. However, SE capability is difficult to maintain, and recalcitrance to SE has become a major obstacle to plant biotechnology. We previously reported that miR156-SPL modules regulate SE in citrus callus.

Starch Accumulation and Enzyme Activities Associated with Starch Synthesis in Maize Kernels

Agricultural Sciences in China, 2007
Abstract The filling rate and the starch accumulation in developing maize kernel were analyzed. The changes of enzyme activities associated with sucrose metabolism and starch biosynthesis were investigated. The purpose is to discuss the enzymatic mechanisms responsible for starch synthesis. Two types of maize cultivars ( Zea mays ), high starch maize (

Culturing duckweed in the field for starch accumulation

Industrial Crops and Products, 2013
Duckweed, a small floating aquatic plant, is a novel bioenergy crop with great potential to accumulate starch. Three factors involved in the growth and starch accumulation of duckweed were investigated in the field: population, harvesting frequency and nutrient supply.

Starch accumulation in Acetabularia mediterranea after X-irradiation

Environmental and Experimental Botany, 1982
Abstract Cell differentiation but not cell elongation is strongly influenced by X-irradiation at exposures of 50 and 100 krad. Banding patterns on sucrose step gradients, measurement of starch and light microscopical inspection of chloroplasts indicate an accumulation of the storage material in irradiated cells.
