Abstract Initial- and lagging-state observer algorithms recently suggested for deterministic time-invariant systems are shown to fail due to the unobservability of the augmented state vector. For such systems, even when their parameters are unknown, an alternative approach for the estimation of the initial state is available and is referenced.

A new extended state observer is proposed in this paper. The internal and external disturbances acting on the nonlinear system in the actual operating environment are reduced to "unknown disturbances". State variables and extended state variables in system are estimated and compensated in real time with input and output data.
