State Supervision of the Feeble-Minded [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of the American Medical Association, 1912
To the Editor: —I believe that you have well summed up the situation in the last sentence in your editorial on "The Elimination of Feeble-Minded Strains" (Nov. 16, 1912, p. 801.) "Considered in all its various aspects it would appear that the most practical plan for the elimination of the feebleminded strains should judiciously combine the methods of ...

Transferrin receptor 1‐mediated iron uptake supports thermogenic activation in human cervical‐derived adipocytes

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
In this study, we found that human cervical‐derived adipocytes maintain intracellular iron level by regulating the expression of iron transport‐related proteins during adrenergic stimulation. Melanotransferrin is predicted to interact with transferrin receptor 1 based on in silico analysis.

Representation Learning by Learning to Count

open access: yes, 2017
We introduce a novel method for representation learning that uses an artificial supervision signal based on counting visual primitives. This supervision signal is obtained from an equivariance relation, which does not require any manual annotation.

Calpain small subunit homodimerization is robust and calcium‐independent

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Calpains dimerize via penta‐EF‐hand (PEF) domains. Using single‐molecule force spectroscopy, we measured the strength and kinetics of PEF–PEF homodimer binding. The interaction is robust, shows a transient conformational step before dissociation, and remains largely insensitive to Ca2+.

Overviews of youth justice supervision in 2011-12 [PDF]

open access: yes
These fact sheets provide overviews of youth justice supervision during 2011–12 by state and territory.Differences in youth justice supervision between the states and territories may reflect variations in legislation, policy and ...

Learning to Compose Neural Networks for Question Answering

open access: yes, 2016
We describe a question answering model that applies to both images and structured knowledge bases. The model uses natural language strings to automatically assemble neural networks from a collection of composable modules. Parameters for these modules are

Structural insights into an engineered feruloyl esterase with improved MHET degrading properties

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
A feruloyl esterase was engineered to mimic key features of MHETase, enhancing the degradation of PET oligomers. Structural and computational analysis reveal how a point mutation stabilizes the active site and reshapes the binding cleft, expading substrate scope.

Self-Supervised Inference in State-Space Models

open access: yes, 2021
We perform approximate inference in state-space models with nonlinear state transitions. Without parameterizing a generative model, we apply Bayesian update formulas using a local linearity approximation parameterized by neural networks. This comes accompanied by a maximum likelihood objective that requires no supervision via uncorrupt observations or ...
