Flexural behaviour of ferrocement. [PDF]

open access: yes, 1982
Ferrocement is often believed to be a form of reinforced concrete. However, in spite of the similarities between the two materials there are still major differences, indicating that ferrocement requires a separate study to establish its structural ...

Organizing the interface—Plasma membrane architecture and receptor dynamics in virus‐cell interactions

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Plasma membranes contain dynamic nanoscale domains that organize lipids and receptors. Because viruses operate at similar scales, this architecture shapes early infection steps, including attachment, receptor engagement, and entry. Using influenza A virus and HIV‐1 as examples, we highlight how receptor nanoclusters, multivalent glycan interactions ...

pH‐mediated activation of the lysosomal arginine sensor SLC38A9

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Cells monitor nutrient levels via the lysosomal transporter SLC38A9 to activate the mechanistic target of rapamycin complex 1 (mTORC1). This study reveals that SLC38A9 function is regulated by pH. We identified histidine 544 as a critical pH sensor that undergoes conformational changes to control amino acid efflux from lysosomes; therefore, it ...

Numerical Evaluation of Delamination on Mode II in Glass Fiber Reinforced Composites

open access: yesEngineering Transactions, 2005
In this paper, delamination of Mode II in a stratified glass fiber-epoxy resin under static loading is investigated. From the results obtained by the finite element method, using the criteria of Irwin-Kies and other theories of elasticity, the strain ...

Residual tail twisting in ascidian larvae is stabilized by asymmetric myofibrils that resist bilateral symmetry restoration

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Ascidian Ciona larvae initially show strong clockwise tail twisting, which is largely corrected during development. However, a small residual twist remains. This study shows that organized helical myofibrils in tail muscles mechanically stabilize this residual asymmetry, preventing complete restoration of bilateral symmetry and revealing how embryos ...

Modeling of flexure-hinge type lever mechanisms

open access: yes, 2003
A general approach for the design of flexure-hinge type lever mechanisms that are commonly used in the design of translational micro-positioning stages is presented in this paper.

3D printed meta-sandwich structures: Failure mechanism, energy absorption and multi-hit capability

open access: yesMaterials & Design, 2018
A new class of lightweight and 3D printable architected sandwich structures, named as meta-sandwich structures, has been introduced. These lightweight sandwich structures, which have been made of mechanical metamaterials as the core, show many advantages

Nonlinear Dynamic Performance of a Bolt-Disc Rotor with the Position Error of Circumferential Bolt-Holes

open access: yesShock and Vibration, 2021
The bolt-holes in the assembly discs are designed to limit the circumferential displacement of bolts for the bolt-disc rotor. The position error of circumferential bolt-holes is created in a three-dimensional model of bolt-disc rotor. The distribution of

Degradation mechanism of the von Willebrand factor A2 domain by nattokinase

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Nattokinase, a natto‐derived protease, exhibits potent antithrombotic effects. This study demonstrates that nattokinase directly cleaves the von Willebrand factor (vWF) A2 domain in vitro. Unlike the native regulator ADAMTS13, nattokinase degrades folded vWF independently of shear stress.
