Influence of an Argon/Silane Atmosphere on the Temperature of a Thermal Plasma

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
The influence of a silane‐doped argon atmosphere on the chemical composition and temperature of a thermal nontransferring argon plasma is investigated using optical emission spectroscopy. As a result of the high amount of free electrons resulting from the stepwise ionization and dissociation of the silane molecule, even a silane addition of 0.01 vol ...

Incorporation of Selenium into Sol–Gel‐Derived Bioactive Glass: Influence on Glass Structure, Bioactivity, and its Selective Cytotoxicity

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Selenium was incorporated into a sol–gel‐derived bioactive glass to enable sustained therapeutic ion release. The selenium‐containing glass preserved bioactivity while selectively inducing cytotoxicity in osteosarcoma cells and maintaining osteoblastic viability.

Plasma Oscillations: II. Kinetic theory of waves in plasmas

open access: yes, 1964
This work is the second part (and chapter VI) of a three-part series reviewing the subject of plasma oscillations. Part I (Nuclear Fusion 1 (1960) 3) was devoted to the macroscopic theory of plasmas in general, and plasma waves in particular, in both ...

Affecting the Properties of Copper–Graphene Electroconductive Composite by Severe Plastic Deformation

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Copper‐based composites enhanced with carbon feature convenient mechanical properties and favorable electric conductivity. Processing via deformation and thermomechanical treatments can introduce advantageous microstructures further enhancing their performance. Herein, copper–graphene powder‐based composites are directly consolidated via rotary swaging

Statistical mechanics and Vlasov equation allow for a simplified Hamiltonian description of Single-Pass Free Electron Laser saturated dynamics

open access: yes, 2006
A reduced Hamiltonian formulation which reproduces the saturated regime of a Single Pass Free Electron Laser, around perfect tuning, is here discussed. Asymptotically, N m particles are found to organize in a dense cluster, that evolves as an individual ...

A: Universality in Vortex Formation. B: Evaluation of Mach Wave Radiation Mechanisms in a Supersonic Jet [PDF]

open access: yes, 2000
In this thesis two distinct features of coherent structures are investigated. In Part I a model for the pinch-off process in vortex ring formation is developed.

High‐Temperature Nanoindentation of Metals: Assessing Thermal Drift, Frame Compliance, and Chemical Composition Effects on the Reported Mechanical Properties

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Do not let thermal drift and instrument artifacts deceive high‐temperature nanoindentation results. We compare classical Oliver–Pharr and automatic image recognition analyses across steels and a Ni alloy to quantify these effects. Accounting for artifacts reveals systematic softening with temperature, while Cr and Ni additions boost resistance ...

Combining tomographic imaging and DEM simulations to investigate the structure of experimental sphere packings [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
We introduce and describe in detail a “virtual laboratory” platform to study granular materials by combining advanced image reconstruction techniques from computed X-ray micro tomography and discrete element method simulations. This platform allows us to

Direct Metal Deposition of Graphene–Ti28Nb35.4Zr Matrix Composites With Enhanced Mechanical, Corrosion, and Biocompatibility Properties for Bone Implants

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Graphene nanoplatelet (0.1 wt.%) reinforcement significantly enhances the performance of β Ti‐28Nb‐35.4Zr alloy. Grain refinement, reduced water contact angle, and improved surface characteristics promote osteoblast adhesion and complete surface coverage after 7 days.
