The relationship between statistical power and predictor distribution in multilevel logistic regression: a simulation-based approach

open access: yesBMC Medical Research Methodology, 2019
BackgroundDespite its popularity, issues concerning the estimation of power in multilevel logistic regression models are prevalent because of the complexity involved in its calculation (i.e., computer-simulation-based approaches).

Addressing persistent challenges in digital image analysis of cancer tissue: resources developed from a hackathon

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Large multidimensional digital images of cancer tissue are becoming prolific, but many challenges exist to automatically extract relevant information from them using computational tools. We describe publicly available resources that have been developed jointly by expert and non‐expert computational biologists working together during a virtual hackathon

Impact of molecular diagnostics and targeted cancer therapy on patient outcomes (MODIFY): a retrospective study of the implementation of precision oncology

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
The authors conducted a retrospective study of 94 patients with advanced cancer who underwent next‐generation sequencing (NGS) gene panel analysis and received targeted treatments when applicable. Results further support evidence indicating that molecular profiling provides clinical benefit.

Detection rate for ESR1 mutations is higher in circulating‐tumor‐cell‐derived genomic DNA than in paired plasma cell‐free DNA samples as revealed by ddPCR

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Analysis of ESR1 mutations in plasma cell‐free DNA (cfDNA) is highly important for the selection of treatment in patients with breast cancer. Using multiplex‐ddPCR and identical blood draws, we investigated whether circulating tumor cells (CTCs) and cfDNA provide similar or complementary information for ESR1 mutations.

Sample size and its importance in research

open access: yesIndian Journal of Psychological Medicine, 2020
The sample size for a study needs to be estimated at the time the study is proposed; too large a sample is unnecessary and unethical, and too small a sample is unscientific and also unethical.

Tailor-made tests for goodness of fit to semiparametric hypotheses [PDF]

open access: yesAnnals of Statistics 2006, Vol. 34, No. 2, 721-741, 2006
We introduce a new framework for constructing tests of general semiparametric hypotheses which have nontrivial power on the $n^{-1/2}$ scale in every direction, and can be tailored to put substantial power on alternatives of importance. The approach is based on combining test statistics based on stochastic processes of score statistics with bootstrap ...

Robust acute myeloid leukemia engraftment in humanized scaffolds using injectable biomaterials and intravenous xenotransplantation

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Patient‐derived xenografts (PDXs) can be improved by implantation of a humanized niche. We tested different biomaterials and approaches, and demonstrate that the combination of an injectable biomaterial for scaffold creation plus an intravenous route for acute myeloid leukemia (AML) xenotransplantation provide the most convenient and robust approach to

A Systematic Review on the Evolution of Power Analysis Practices in Psychological Research

open access: yesPsychologica Belgica
Performing hypothesis tests with adequate statistical power is indispensable for psychological research. In response to several large-scale replication projects following the replication crisis, concerns about the root causes of this crisis – such as ...

The relation between statistical power and inference in fMRI

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2017
Statistically underpowered studies can result in experimental failure even when all other experimental considerations have been addressed impeccably.

Targeted metabolomics reveals novel diagnostic biomarkers for colorectal cancer

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
This study employed targeted metabolomic profiling to identify 302 distinct metabolites present in platelet‐rich plasma (PRP), revealing aberrant metabolic profiles amongst individuals diagnosed with colorectal cancer (CRC). Compared to carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) and cancer antigen 19‐9 (CA199), our metabolite panel showed improved sensitivity ...
