Measurements of Stellar Properties through Asteroseismology: A Tool for Planet Transit Studies
Oscillations occur in stars of most masses and essentially all stages of evolution. Asteroseismology is the study of the frequencies and other properties of stellar oscillations, from which we can extract fundamental parameters such as density, mass ...

The tribological behavior of 100Cr6 steel spheres textured via Vickers microindentation is evaluated under lubricated sliding by varying both dimple size and density. Fine and dense textures significantly reduce friction across all lubrication regimes, while large dimples increase it.

The observed lithium (Li) abundance of Galactic halo stars mainly falls within the range of 2.0–2.4 dex. This nearly constant value, known as the Spite plateau, is approximately a factor of 3 lower than the value predicted from cosmic microwave ...

Harnessing Fungal Biowelding for Constructing Mycelium‐Engineered Materials
Mycelium‐bound composites (MBCs) offer low‐carbon alternatives for construction, yet interfacial bonding remains a critical challenge. This review examines fungal biowelding as a biocompatible adhesive, elucidating mycelium‐mediated interfacial mechanisms and their role in material assembly. Strategies to optimize biowelding are discussed, highlighting

Powder metal processing provides scalable advantages in nanoporous (np) metal development. Mechanical alloying is used to produce unique precursors for hybrid nanopore formation by oxide reduction and dealloying. As demonstrated in np Ag, this approach improves process efficiency while promoting smaller ligaments and larger pores, both of which are ...

The Physics of Stellar Interiors
These are the slides for a seminar talk that I gave on August 9, 2022 as part of the Space Science and Security Summer Seminar Series at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. The talk gives an overview of some aspects of stellar hydrodynamics, and describes how realistic hydrodynamic simulations are used to improve stellar structure and evolution ...

What Do Large Language Models Know About Materials?
If large language models (LLMs) are to be used inside the material discovery and engineering process, they must be benchmarked for the accurateness of intrinsic material knowledge. The current work introduces 1) a reasoning process through the processing–structure–property–performance chain and 2) a tool for benchmarking knowledge of LLMs concerning ...

A Short Intense Dynamo at the Onset of Crystallization in White Dwarfs
The origin of large magnetic fields (≳10 ^6 G) in isolated white dwarfs is not clear. One possible explanation is that crystallization of the star’s core drives compositional convection, which when combined with the star’s rotation, can drive a dynamo ...

This study examines how several molten high‐silicon electrical steels interact with both conventional and recycled MgO–C refractories. For this, various immersion experiments are conducted. In addition to infiltration, a number of mechanisms are identified and explained that control the corrosion of the refractory material.

Magnetic Webs in Stellar Radiative Zones
Rotational evolution of stellar radiative zones is an old puzzle. We argue that angular momentum transport by turbulent processes induced by differential rotation is insufficient, and propose that a key role is played by “magnetic webs.” We define ...
