The Stellar Kinematics of Elliptical Galaxies [PDF]

open access: yesSymposium - International Astronomical Union, 1987
The kinematic properties of elliptical galaxies are summarized. New developments are discussed in four areas: (i) the Faber-Jackson relation and the role of second parameters (ii) the luminosity-rotation relation (iii) the figures of elliptical galaxies and (iv) the mass-to-light ratio as a function of radius.

Stellar kinematics and interstellar turbulence [PDF]

open access: yesSymposium - International Astronomical Union, 1979
It is well known that the velocity dispersion of nearby stars increases systematically with age, and this fact is conventionally explained by postulating that stars are randomly accelerated by encounters with massive gas clouds (Spitzer & Schwarzschild 1951, 1953; Wielen 1977).

Stellar kinematics

open access: yes, 2021
Integral field spectroscopic (IFS) surveys have revolutionised our understanding of the stellar dynamics in external galaxies at z~0. Studies of gas-phase dynamics and deep slit-based spectroscopy at high redshift show that galaxies have experienced significant dynamical evolution since z~1.

Kinematics of stellar substructures in the small magellanic cloud

open access: yesMonthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society, 2023
ABSTRACT We present a kinematic analysis of the Small Magellanic Cloud using 3700 spectra extracted from the European Southern Observatory archive. We used data from Gaia and near-infrared photometry to select stellar populations and discard Galactic foreground stars. The sample includes main-sequence red giant branch and red clump stars,

Investigation of the Stellar Population of Several Polar Ring Galaxies

open access: yesGalaxies, 2016
We present results of our investigation of two multi-spin galaxies which were taken from the catalog of polar ring galaxies. All of them possess nucleus-like knots.

Oort Constants and Local Stellar Kinematics from GCNS

open access: yesUniverse, 2023
Oort constants and local kinematics are vital parameters with which to study the structure and dynamics of the Milky Way. When GCNS was published, it provided a clean sample of stars in the solar vicinity, which gives us an ideal tool with which to ...

KINEMATIC DISCOVERY OF A STELLAR STREAM LOCATED IN PISCES [PDF]

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal, 2013
We report the kinematic discovery of the Pisces Stellar Stream (PSS), at Galactic longitude of roughly l=135 degrees and longitude between -39 < b < -36 deg. We originally identified this halo substructure from velocities of red giant branch stars in Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Data Release 8, and confirmed its presence in turnoff stars from ...

Resolved SPLASH Chemodynamics in Andromeda’s PHAT Stellar Halo and Disk: On the Nature of the Inner Halo along the Major Axis

open access: yesThe Astronomical Journal, 2023
Stellar kinematics and metallicity are key to exploring formation scenarios for galactic disks and halos. In this work, we characterized the relationship between kinematics and photometric metallicity along the line of sight to M31's disk.
