Structural insights into an engineered feruloyl esterase with improved MHET degrading properties

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
A feruloyl esterase was engineered to mimic key features of MHETase, enhancing the degradation of PET oligomers. Structural and computational analysis reveal how a point mutation stabilizes the active site and reshapes the binding cleft, expading substrate scope.

Star−Disk Collisions: Implications for Quasi-periodic Eruptions and Other Transients near Supermassive Black Holes

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal
We use Athena++ to study the hydrodynamics of repeated star−accretion disk collisions close to supermassive black holes, and we discuss their implications for the origin of quasi-periodic eruptions (QPEs) and other repeating nuclear transients.

Variation of the High-mass Slope of the Stellar Initial Mass Function: Theory Meets Observations

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal, 2023
We present observational evidence of a correlation between the high-mass slope of the stellar initial mass function (IMF) in young star clusters and their stellar surface density, σ _* .

Valosin‐containing protein counteracts ATP‐driven dissolution of FUS condensates through its ATPase activity in vitro

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Biomolecular condensates formed by fused in sarcoma (FUS) are dissolved by high ATP concentrations yet persist in cells. Using a reconstituted system, we demonstrate that valosin‐containing protein (VCP), an AAA+ ATPase, counteracts ATP‐driven dissolution of FUS condensates through its D2 ATPase activity.

Luminosity and Stellar Mass Functions of Faint Photometric Satellites around Spectroscopic Central Galaxies from DESI Year-1 Bright Galaxy Survey

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal
We measure the luminosity functions (LFs) and stellar mass functions (SMFs) of photometric satellite galaxies around spectroscopically identified isolated central galaxies (ICGs). The photometric satellites are from the DESI Legacy Imaging Surveys (DR9),

Radial variation in the stellar mass functions of star clusters [PDF]

open access: yesMonthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society, 2016
A number of recent observational studies of Galactic globular clusters have measured the variation in the slope of a cluster's stellar mass function $α$ with clustercentric distance $r$. In order to gather a deeper understanding of the information contained in such observations, we have explored the evolution of $α(r)$ for star clusters with a variety ...

Diversity and complexity in neural organoids

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Neural organoid research aims to expand genetic diversity on one side and increase tissue complexity on the other. Chimeroids integrate multiple donor genomes within single organoids. Self‐organising multi‐identity organoids, exogenous cell seeding, or enforced assembly of region‐specific organoids contribute to tissue complexity.

Epigenetic blind spots – the role of DNA methylation dynamics in stem cell‐based models of embryogenesis

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Embryo‐like structures (stembryos) are an innovative tool, but they are hindered by experimental variability and limited developmental potential. DNA methylation is crucial for mammalian development, but its status in stembryo models is poorly characterized.

Evolution of the Stellar Mass Function in Open Clusters from a Universal and Unsegregated Initial State

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal Letters
The stellar mass function (MF) and its spatial variation (mass segregation) within star clusters encode signatures of early formation physics and subsequent secular evolution.
